Tokens of Affection

Many years ago, as a young child, I purchased my Mother a gift when she was in the hospital. It is a pot painted with purple orchids and it came with flowering bulbs to plant, which has a little saying on it "A Mother's love fills the world with happiness." Every trinket that I bought or made over the years, my mother cherished. Now, of course I always knew was to WHY she cherished them and WHY the lovely words made her smile.... my Mom loved me. But now, looking back, I never even knew the impact of the items I gave her inscribed with poems devoted to the love of a Mother, nor did I understand what these expressions of my affection meant to Mom. To me, they were just tokens, simple gifts really, but to her they held so much more meaning.

There was something Mom gave me before she died... a framed card, very old and worn looking... she always had it on her bedroom dresser for as long as I could remember. In fact, this is the very last thing she gave me. I always thought why do you want that ugly thing? And as I sit here in my bedroom and look over at it, I cannot help the tears from welling in my eyes. I know now why she had it there, on the dresser where she stood every morning and got dressed. And the words on it, they ring so true, and not just for mothers and children, but the people that touch our lives, for good or bad.

    Children Learn What They Live

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.

If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight.

If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.

If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty.

If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence.

If a child lives with praise he learns to appreciate.

If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice.

If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith.

If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,

He learns to find love in the world.

That's really beautiful Moe! There's nothing so strong as a bond between mother and child IMO. Take care Moe.

This is so touching and so true.

When I was younger, I remember drawing pictures at my great aunts farmhouse. She lived way out of town and there wasnt much else to do so we always grabbed the crayons and kept ourselves busy.

When she died, her sister came accross a large box in the back of her closet. Inside the box was every card we had given and every picture we had ever drawn for her. My aunt had even gone as far as dating and writing our names on the upper right hand corner of each picture. I couldnt believe that she had actually saved pictures these pictures for over 20 years. This one I drew for her in June of 1982, so that would have made me about 11 years old at the time. When my sister and I recieved these, we were in tears for hours.

My grandparents didnt have alot of money and they also saved things that we had bought or made them. When they passed away, everyone was told to take everything that they had ever given to them, before the rest was divided up amongst the children.

Looking though my grandmothers jewelry box, I found an old sterling silver heart locket I had given her years before. I opened it up and noticed that she had inserted my childrens picture inside. I could have died. She had many grandchildren so it was very touching to know that she actually remembered that I had given her the locket, then to see my childrens photo inside was something I cant even put into words.

A couple of years later, we were running out he door to get the kids Christmas pictures taken. My daughter asked if she could borrow a necklace since she had a plain white sweater on. We were in a hurry so I went to start the car and told her to just grab something out of my jewelry box. It wasnt until we got to the studio that I noticed she was wearing the locket. Well, Im sure you can imagine what a wreck I was for these pictures. It took everything in me to keep from bawling as she posed for this pic.

You are right Amanda. Those little things can mean a whole lot someday.

Touching poem Moe. Thanks for sharing.

Heaven, wow what a story. I'm sitting here with goosebumps after reading it. It's amazing how valuable something from childhood becomes when we've grown and nothing moreso than all those simple tokens like a drawing. Is that your daughter with the locket? She's a real sweetie.

After my mom died I went into my dad's house (while he was gone to the circuit assembly) to get my baby pictures. Much to my dismay I found that my mother had destroyed every one of them, including all my report cards from elementary school. She even cut me out of a picture in which I was standing next to my father. So I gathered up all of our old slides (over 1,000) and the rest of the pictures in that box and went home. As we were looking through them, I discovered hundreds and hundreds of baby/toddler photos I had never seen before. It turns out that these had come from my mother's twin sister's house. She had kept them all these years because we moved a lot and little room for storage. I also discovered some cards and letters from when my parents were children that I had never seen or read before. It gave me a window on them that I had never had before and I began to realize how betrayed they were by their parents. Perspective is interesting, isn't it?

    Tex,

So sweet, thank you. They are such little things, but they mean so much.

Finding things about someone after they pass away can be so powerful. Its too bad we didnt know about these things when they were here, so we could have given them a big hug.

Who knows, maybe this is their way of hugging us, even though they cant be with us.

Interesting. I never thought of it that way before. I need to think on this one for a while. Thanks Heaven. What a lovely and kind way to look at it.

Yep, nothing should EVER break that parent/child bond. Certainly not the dictates of a bunch of old men on the upper floors in Brooklyn.

I'll be lavishing hugs on this sweety when her flight gets in next weekend.
