There maybe some truth to your idea of numbers meaning something in the Bible. The number 40 has connections to the Sumerian god Enki. The Adam story is also Sumerian in its origins. If there is a connection it's probably something connected to Sumeria or Babylon over Egypt.

The ancient Hebrews created and held a certain amount of sacredness toward numbers such as 40 or 7 , 70 or 12 as the 12 tribes of Israel which may have come from the 12 signs of the Zodiac.
Interesting in the fact that we today 3000 years on still uses those supposed divine sacred numbers as in the 7 days of a week and 12 months of a year.
