This is a question I also pondered during my early days of inactivity. This is (briefly) the way I thought it through. Although I have not researched the behaviour of cults in any depth, I think to some degree the Western philosophical take on this issue is due to our society's concept of individualism and subsequent distrust of excessive cohesion and control. In other group oriented cultures, strong cohesion is not considered a threat to personal freedom, but security. The goal is to think alike, not differently, and much personal sacrifice will be made in order to achieve this goal. In the past, community survival depended on this way of thinking, so I think this need/desire is ingrained somewhere deep within the human psyche. Humans are social creatures, when all said and done. They generally like to belong, regardless of whether they are from a group oriented or individualistic culture, but the way of development of Western cultures has allowed for greater choice in this matter. Even then, large numbers of people can be swayed very easily by a clever politician or authority figure, if it is perceived to be for the good of the group (eg present world situation). The numbers (6 mill) really don't mean a lot, I decided, when the whole of humankind is taken into consideration.

Hang on a minute!!.... I'm not sure JWs have ever said they must be right because "we have 6 milllion members"....I do remember them quoting the Bible that says something like only a few find the road to life, and it being narrow and cramped.... just thought I'd say before everyone gets taken with the flies on dogshit analogy. LOL

For the record, I never suggested that the efflluent was from a dog. And I doubt anyone will be able to produce a WT article that says 'We are six million, so we must be right.' But do not deny that JWs tout their growth and numbers as proof of God's blessing and therefore their correctness. I've had these conversation with active dubbies, though they tend to be short. And by the way, I was in the org once, and I have a memory.

Hey ikhandi,.what makes you think as a group,we think 6 million people,are being misled into believing this is the only true religion?..Fans of the WBTS just love to lump everybody together.It makes it easy to judge and pronounce sentence,as though they were the personal representives of god ,LOL! ..Some are born into it,some are so old they have no other social support group,some are institutionalized,some don`t believe it but like the social atmospheresome,some are only there so as not to be shunned by their family`s (WBTS will make dam sure they are shunned)..ect..ect..ect..The reasons why people are in the JW`s are numerous,including being misled....
