A funeral service is to support the living in their grief. Since the JWs want to set so many rules, just leave them out. They weren't there when Bill was alive, why should they be there at his death. I can't see what good they would add. BigTex and Cruzanheart, just involve his real friends and family and have an event that honors him and supports you. I have my will set up describing what I want done for my funeral services and the first rule is "no JWs" not on the my list and then only if they let my husband run the show. One little "suggestion" and off the list they go. I am going to have Amazing Grace played at my funeral too. I love that song.

Thank you all for your kind words and support for us at this time. I swear, yesterday was the most stressful day for us since Dad's body was found. However, I am very comfortable with the arrangements we have made. People who really care about him will be speaking, and our daughter asked if she and I could wear leis that Grandpa brought back from Hawaii. I think that's a beautiful idea. And after all of this is over, probably next week, I am going to write a letter to the body of elders at Preston Park Plano congregation, with a copy sent to everyone in the congregation whose address I can find, and tell them that they have my father's blood on their hands. I am half Greek and there aren't any people except for maybe the Italians who can pronounce a curse as good as we can, so I plan to summon the spirits of my ancestors and lay into them. My grandfather had a really great curse that he would pronounce when he was upset that ended "and your bad black figs." Unfortunately, my mother was so superstitious she only told it to me a couple of times.

Anyway, I'm kind of hanging in there with the help of Big Tex and Valium. I have an appointment with my therapist on Monday. My best friend and her husband flew in for the weekend, and that's a big help too. And I know I have your support, thoughts and prayers, dear friends.

    Love always,

    Nina

BTW - "Amazing Grace" is what your father experienced from his new worldly friends before his passing. I think the song is completely appropriate and God can't help but smile on that. I've never been able to sing that song without crying. Never. And I hope I never get to the point where I can without crying. I want my heart to always be softened by the meaning behind those words.

(((Cruzan & Big Tex))) - I'm glad you have support with you now, and I hope you know we are all there with you in spirit -

"By their love you will know them" - but that's kind of hard to see when its one of your best friends. I'm sorry he let you down, but perhaps God will find a way to his heart & perhaps he'll reconsider.

With a lot of love & my deepest sympathies sent your way (and a "kick um once for me as well"!)

    Love,

    Rhonda

Well a good night's sleep really helps. The memorial service went very well. I said, or tried, to say a few things about Bill but couldn't get through dry eyed. As usual I came off as kind of goofy. Nina was much better than I was. But I will let her talk about that if she wants to. We wanted a celebration of Bill's life and spirit, and it was. We held it at his retirement home, since this is where his true friends were. The room was covered in huge bouquets of flowers. There must have been 100 people there and half were residents of the retirement home. One of Bill's friends sang "Amazing Grace". It was one of the most beautiful and moving renditions I've ever heard. Several of Bill's friends spoke about him and what he meant to them. But each one stopped early for emotion in the room was strong and the event was close to all of us. Nina and I made the right choice to celebrate Bill's life in his home, and not with some sterile outline at a Kingdom Hall full of hypocritical, mean-spirited bigots.

As for my best friend, I called him a few hours later Friday evening and told him that he was not welcome at the memorial service. Everyone here at JWD had a part in that phone call because after reading what all of you wrote, it gave me the courage to tell him that. It is tough to do that when you're so close to someone. However, after the service I found out that he had called a JW who was going to attend and told her to bring some brochures on death and pass them around. Fortunately Nina greeted her at the door and took them from her. I told her to trash them immediately. A celebration of Bill's life is not the time or place to be book salesmen, or to listen to a JW infomercial. This is a rift between us that I don't know if I even want to repair.

When I made my original post, I was so angry I think I made a poor description of the events. So let me take just a moment to clarify a couple of points. Everyone, except our children, knew Bill committed suicide. In fact my best friend was at our house just a few hours after we met with the police, and we told him the gruesome details of how Bill shot himself (apparently in Texas there is no waiting period for purchasing a gun). My best friend, who is an elder, had no problems at first with our plans for Bill's service. But then gradually he began to try to assert some JW propaganda into the proceedings. Late Friday afternoon, he told us one of his objections was the song "Amazing Grace" which he labeled as "a religous song from Babylon the Great". He told us he would not say anything, even though he looked on Bill as a second father, unless that song was removed. When we refused he said we would have to put the song at the end of the proceedings then he would say the propaganda and leave so as not to be polluted with such an evil song. He did not even want to be in the building when this song was song.

Thank you to everyone here. You don't know how much your support has meant to Nina and I.

    Love to you all,

    Chris

    Dear Chris and Nina,

I had the pleasure of knowing you guys briefly when we went to the same hall in the 1980's, and refound you guys this past year on this website. My heart sinks for both of you regarding your loss and I am so sorry. I had talked to Nina last week on the phone briefly and have enjoyed finding you guys again. I am so disgusted with the way some JW's act regarding death and their relatives or friends. I remember hearing that when my great grandfather died in the 1950's, my great uncle insisted on a JW funeral (he was JW and no one else) and they passed around literature at that funeral also. I don't understand at the time of death and grief they insist on shoving their beliefs on everyone's throat with some tract or brochure.

Again, my heart goes out to you both at this time of sorrow. No words I can say will make it any easier, other than I love you guys and am sincerely sorry for your loss.

Hey Tex,I`m happy your feeling better..If you had let those dubs in,it is very evident they would have used the funeral for their own purposes. They have no respect for anyones wish`s but their own,how incredibly selfish and bad mannered....My best to you and Nina...OUTLAW
