"Would an NIV bible be a good translation to work with?"

If you want to research a few bibles for your use I suggest you go to biblegateway.com where they have about 50 different English translations. The New International Version is their default translation but you can pick and choose anyone you'd like.

The reason I like the NIV Study Bible is the loads of extra information that you don't get with online versions. I'm told the New Jerusalem Bible also has loads of historical information as well.

The Amplified Bible is as good as any, and far better than most IMO.

I also like my Nelson's New King James Version Study Bible.

The NIV is my favourite... one of the things I've done is when I come across a passage that seems totally different to the NWT is to look up bible commetaries and concordances (the bible hub is a great online resource). It can make for some great discussions and different ideas.

Though not perfect of course I find Arne has a good handle on scripture having studied with various Christian denominations. He draws some interesting conclusions and his commentaries as well as translations are enjoyable.

NIV is good. I have been using that and sometimes WEB. When I first started reading the bible myself I took my husband's advice and started at John. Which is a pretty good place to start if you were brought up JW,

    "John 1:1New International Version (NIV)
The Word Became Flesh1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

If you want to test the waters with bibles maybe check out, https://www.biblegateway.com/ that way you can see what you like best before committing to buying a new bible.

Right now it doesn't matter which bible she reads. She still has on Watchtower goggles.

If I may.... STOP! BACK UP!

First step should be to put Watchtower teachings in a box and drop-kick them to the curb. The best way to do this is to get Ray Franz's books, Crisis of Conscience and In Search of Christian Freedom. Perhaps one of Steve Hassan's books to help you understand how it all happened to you in the first place. This will set her mind free so that she is THEN ready to adopt a "new truth" - which will only amount to a new OPINION, but one she and you are completely free to explore.
