Starting in 1983, JW's in law enforcement and security were no longer considered "exemplary" and could no longer hold "privileges" in the congregation. Those that held those types of jobs were given six months to find other employment.

I know this is a question for US members but I've just got to say that in the UK back in the day (talking 70s, 80s, 90s and early 00s) fishing was outright banned unless it was for lunch. Even then noone would admit to it generally. Let alone any type of gun ownership. In fact if you'd told us it was permitted in the US, we wouldn't have believed it! Just goes to show this so-called JW unity of belief etc is a myth.

Somewere here a JW is a policemen, is tolerated in the congegration but cant partake in formal activity.
