Hey guys, so now that I’m pretty much atheist and I’m not scared of demons or supernatural things, or bring them into my house by watching movies or reading books about them LOL, I defenitly want to watch a few scary movies. I’ve always loved scary movies, but as witness, you don’t get to watch many since they need to be pg-13 and have no spiritism in it lol. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not like too much torture stuff though or people getting mutilated or their bodies chopped in two by chainsaws.

I appreciate any suggestions, thank you.

Does anyone have any suggestions? - oh God yes ...

I do not like ... their bodies chopped in two by chainsaws - well, I suppose I could still recommend The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) because the film never explicitly shows the chainsaw cutting flesh. Like all great horror films, it makes the viewer imagine it.

If you want to dive head first into horror, then I recommend The Exorcist (1973). I first saw it last year aged 38 and it was pretty scary ... but it's a good movie.

I guess it depends what subgenre of horror interests you.

Other supernatural films worth seeing are Carrie (1976) and The Shining (1980).

Sci-Fi horror ... Alien (1979), The Thing (1982) - both these films also feature body horror.

Slasher films ... Halloween (1978), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

Body horror ... The Fly (1986).

Psychological horror ... Psycho (1960), The Silence of The Lambs (1991), The Witch (2016).

Vampire horror ... Fright Night (1985), Near Dark (1987).

Hope you pick good horror films - please get back to us after you've seen a few.

Yes it depends if you can tolerate fake gore - because it is fake you know, no one actually gets murdered horribly.

Alien is a classic for the building of suspense, intrigue and implied threat as you don't get a really good long inspection of the alien, critical if you want to maintain a sense of real threat. Some horror movies show too much of the monster/threat when building suspense, I think less is more.

I like any that have elements of supernatural and mystery that keep you guessing what's going on.

The Shining while being criticized for not being true to the book is actually very suspenseful - I thought anyway.

The Insidious group of movies was pretty scary though I haven't seen the last instalment.

I like American Horror Story for the writing and the stories mainly but it is gory so viewer beware.

Um, I'm thinking maybe you don't know what the horror genre is about actually!

You might as well have asked, "I want to watch some porn but only without any sex in it."

That being said, if you seriously want to watch some horror, go see It.

Thank you guys. I do love Carrie that’s a great one. And yes jp1692, maybe I just need to build a better tolerance lol. I just meant that I’m not really interested in Saw movies, truth or dare, would you rather, where the whole movie is about people being tormented. I don’t mind if it’s done disturbing stuff, but I’m more interested in like paranormal haunting stuff, I understand all horror has gore though.

I don't have any suggestions, but there are different types of horror. There are some horror movies that are too crude in the killings. There are also stories that have some christian/religious connotations. There are some that are laughable at how badly they are done, but they are fun nonetheless.

I'm sure that as you start getting into them, you'll develop your own taste.

This movie isn't new. It doesn't have great special effects although it was probably pretty good for it's time. It does have some nice acting and rewatching it today, made me scared like it did when I was a kid. Mostly because it was filmed a little like film noir.

The Conjuring and The Ring are two more recent ones I like. I'm not into gore. For classics The Exorcist and Psycho have to be seen. The Thing (original) is one of my all time favourite films. I love John Carpenter films, The Fog and Escape From New York are classics IMO.
