Yessiree...I had an afternoon off last Friday. So I decided to venture down to the Toronto Humane Society.

I was so surprised at the variety of animals: dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, mice and birds.

Rayzorblade found the bird cage, and well...having a penchant for my flying feathered friends, I looked at the four that were there. A couple of them were given up because their previous owner developed an allergy to them. Another, looked abused .

Well, I managed to watch them for about an hour, and decided to come back on Monday to pick up one of the birds.

I arrived on Monday, and was met by a very dilligent Toronto Humane Society staff member. I managed to convince them (40 questions, honestly) that I could care for this little bird.

I eventually walked out the door with a little yellow parakeet. She is very tiny, but very easy-going. She's OK around me, but she's obviously not used to being handled, but I will work with her gradually. She loves music, and will chirp to a favourite song. She has been eating her seeds/millet, and drinking water. So she's slowly adjusting.

If anyone on this forum is considering owning a pet, I would highly recommend their local Humane Society. There are so many animals in need of a good home and stable loving environment. Most of the animals (dogs/cats) are spayed or neutered. There's always something for somebody there.

Has anyone on the forum, adopted a pet from their local humane society? Just curious. What was your experience?

    Thanks! http://www.torontohumanesociety.com

    Rayzor,

What a guy! Well done, sir, for your kindness. Very touching. I'm sure you and the parakeet will have years of enjoyment together. Good to see a happy story on the forum.

Awww! Congratulations :) I just got a parakeet tooooo. I'm in love with the little guy. They are so grigarious and funny. The boys named him Nicky. He's a blue one, and is full of personality. Did you know they can live to be 18 years old?? I was suprised to learn that. I also learned from one site on the web that you should NOT get grit covers for the perches cause it can really chew up their poor little feet. It's a great site! here's the link: http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/articles/bird_caring.html

Well take care and enjoy your new companion!

BW - many thanks! Where I used to live, the resident cockatiel and I were great friends (I posted a pic of her). I still see her when I go to my friend's place. She was like my pet too, and I love her dearly.

The parakeet, she's doing OK. She tends to be a bit of late night character too.

I saved the link BW, and I truly appreciate you sending me this info. I have not put any stuff on the wooden sticks/perches. She is free to fly out of the cage if she wishes, but I can tell she is too afraid. I will train her slowly and patiently.

She is really cute, all yellow and very cute.

Thanks BW, the information you posted was timely.

Thanks from myself and the 'unnamed' little birdie .

    Hey Rayzor,

    You are welcome

Ours is starting to come out his cage more and more. He was so funny today! They boys were playing Xbox and he came and landed on the cord that was stretched out! He rapelled up the thing all the way up to the entertainment center. Cracked me up

    Take care

    congrats on the new pet.

I adopted a female blue heeler/black lab mix about 15 years ago. She was a beautiful dog, and quite well behaved.....until you left her alone

During the short time (about a month) i had her, she chewed up my couch, my car seats, killed all the neighbors ducks, destroyed my television remote and pretty much made all the neighbors hate me ..........I sure miss that remote

Ray. Congrats on your adoptee !

We had a cockatiel, once........... We were letting mother in law look after it, and she decided, since it was a nice day she was going to let it perch outside on the back deck ! We used to keep his wings clipped, just so he couln,t fly around too, too much in the house, but it hadn't been done for a while. Well guess what.......he flew away. Miss that bird. He was always fun to have around, especially when he would perch on visitor's heads, and do a little birdy doo doo !

I have adopted 2 or 3 rabbits and last april a dog. A beautiful husky-german shepard (sp?) mix. She was one year old. She is so affectionate, we love her. But she needs more exercise than we can give her. We can't let her out alone, she would just follow her nose and get lost.... done that once, we were devastated, it was very cold and she spent one night outside... We found her thankfully... So we have to walk her on a leash at least 3 times a day...

Way to go! Congratulations! It just sickens me to know how many people give up/abuse their pets, but I am heartened by those like yourself who adopt them into a good home. There is a no-kill animal rescue association here at which I am thinking of volunteering. Too many lonely animals, not enough good people like yourself!

Once folks from the local animal shelter shows some of their dogs and cats on a local TV station. I swear it I have problems keeping my emotions in check. I get this almost uncontrollable desire to run over there and adopt all of them. Pets are wonderful, but there is more than can be adopted out, so please have your animals neutered. Bug
