    WITNESS 007:

I came in after 1975. They mentioned Armageddon a lot.

I guess I was a bad Witness because I wasn’t scared shitless and quaking in my boots.. I didn’t quit my full-time job to do housecleaning and pioneering.🙄

The way I figured it: mankind was bad and Armageddon would come some day. Back when I was a ‘believer’ I hoped I would be saved. But, since you could never do enough in the Jehovah’s Witness religion - there was always doubt. (I believe this is a tactic of theirs.) But, I continued as I was.

Then the 1995 Generation teaching came out and that was it for me.. It took a while but I started my ‘Fade’ the 9/11 timeframe. You had to see all the scared inactives coming back because they were afraid of Armageddon.. Meanwhile, I was headed for the door. I just didn’t believe the JW religion anymore.

Let us not underestimate the 1995 doctrine of "generation(s)".

    Its significant..

    🙂

    BETH SARIM:

It’s true the 1995 ‘Generation’ doctrine should not be underestimated.

It may not be anywhere near as serious or attention grabbing as ‘1975’, but it was important nonetheless. The 1975 disaster caused massive upheavals in peoples’ lives. People who believed this prediction and centered their lives around it suffered immeasurably. It is not surprising the JW religion lost a million or more people.

The 1995 ‘Generation’ teaching was a change in understanding. But, it changed a linchpin teaching. There were Witnesses who felt this belief was carved in stone. When the religion pulled the rug out from under everybody - the religion was over for a lot of people.

This was why I left.. I just didn’t trust the JW religion anymore.👎 It also confirmed to me that I was wise to ignore them when they tried to interfere with my job! Many people may not have left right away - but they were headed for the door.. I don’t know how many left the Witness religion over 1995 but I am sure the amount was considerable.

    1995 generation teaching.

It just keeps on giving. Doesn't it?

Yeah I agree, the generation teaching was not date specific, but highly significant. Arguably in a sense it was the most definite of the “dates” JWs promoted because it was stated categorically in the Awake! magazine for years that Jehovah himself had promised to bring the new world within the lifetime of 1914 generation.

1925 was meant to be the return of the ancient worthies not the date of Armageddon as such.

1975 was strongly implied but not definitely claimed as the date for Armageddon, at least in the literature, public talks were reportedly more definite.

1914 was initially to be the culmination of the end times which switched to beginning of the end times as it got closer.

1874 was claimed after the fact to be a significant date so it wasn’t a prediction as such.

1881 I honestly don’t know what the deal was with that date but it’s cited a lot.

2034 has been mooted as a possible date because the days of Noah have been likened to the last days and 1914 + 120 = 2034. Given the impending AI apocalypse maybe this has a chance of being correct!

I don’t know enough about the other dates to say.

A noteworthy example is the date for the sealing of the 144,000, a date constantly changed. Russell originally set it as being 1878. This was moved to 1881, 1910, 1914, 1925, 1931 and finally 1935. In 2007 it has admitted as unknown.

The dates above and their meaning as it evolved can be found at www.jwfacts.com

Russell had said that all 144,000 had been chosen by 1881 and presented a number of Biblical reasons why this was the case.

"Remember, too, that the Scriptures proved to us in various ways-by the Jubilee Cycles, the 1335 days of Daniel, the Parallel Dispensations, etc.-that the "harvest" or end of this age was due to begin in October, 1874, and that the Great Reaper was then due to be present; that seven years later-in October, 1881-the "high calling" ceased, though some will be admitted to the same favors afterward, without a general call being made, to fill the places of some of the called ones who, on being tested, will be found unworthy."
