  Why did ancient Israel go to war?

  WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS

  The nations whom Israel defeated were thoroughly corrupted by violence and depraved practices​—including bestiality, incest, and child sacrifice. After giving them centuries to change their ways, God said: “It is by all these things that the nations that I am driving out from before you have made themselves unclean.”​—Leviticus 18:21-25; Jeremiah 7:31.

  Writer intends to show that what the Bible says proves wrong what people say. But is that so?

  The other nations were more corrupt than Israel only by the standards of the Law. By contemporary moral principles they were no worse.

  • Today halal killing of the animals, as described in the Law, is considered as inhumane treatment.
  • Incest or any other sexual activity between consenting adults is not regulated in many liberal states.
  • There is at least one case of child sacrifice mentioned in the Bible, so Israelites were no better.

  On the other hand the nations didn't stone to death people that collected wood on the wrong weekday. So if I was Baal I would feel more than justified to say:

  “It is because of the wickedness of Israelites that Baal your God is driving them away from before you.”​—Tritonomy 9:5.

  So if they went to war to combat those practices of the "evil nations", why did they do the same sort of activities?

  I mean, their own young were killed in wars. Their own young girls were taken as child brides and subjugated . Their own God demanded endless animal blood sacrifices.

  What discernable difference was there between "gods people" and the surrounding nations?

  The history of the re-imaged Caananites...er...Israelites is a hard pill to swallow. When YHWH turns out to actually be part of the Baal pantheon of gods (El) it is like pulling the rug out from under the feet of both Judaism and Christianity.

  Watchtower writers follow the principle well known to Hitler:

  Accuse not the God of the Bible of being a bloodthirsty genocidal maniac; instead focus on what people did to "deserve" His wrath, babes in arms included.

  Oh, and whilst some individuals undoubtedly did particpate in depraved practicises such as bestiality and child sacrifice, not every single inhabitant did. Which makes tragically bizarre the Jehovian command to his people to wipe out all inhabitants, including babies, from the "Promised Land".

  This reminds me of a chapter in I think Jerimiah where he, Jerimiah, is telling the people to put away their worship of Ashurah and worship only Jehovah. Their response is no way when we do things for her and worship her good things happen when we worship Jehovah it's implied that nothing good comes from it.

  So jehovah orders the killing in Canaan every single innocent baby and little child to punish the Canaanites for their deplorable and wicked practice of killing innocent babies and little children.

  It has surprised me why the established Christian religion under constantine didnt just discard the " Old Testament " as irrelevant to the christianity that was now emerging.
