My ex really detested the French. As you know, he was English. I guess I caught more of his biases than I thought. No excuse, though. I myself don't know much about the French, except that all of my relatives who have been there, including two daughters, say that as soon as the French realized they were Americans, my relatives were treated shabbily.

I'm sorry. I was out of line.

Just been watching BBC New 24 they interviewed some Russians (in Russia). They feel the Americans need to be stopped, they said, that they are trying to take over the world!

Jealousy ........... is mans worst enemy!

...............Not too sure what the French think of us Brits!

Actually, I was really perplexed at how much others hate Americans.....I guess because I can only see my own actions, and I tend to distance myself from the actions of the US Gov't. The tasteless comment about not caring about the French notwithstanding, I honestly don't have anything against any nationality or race. So I get upset at times, because in my overly simplistic mind, I can't understand why anyone would have anything against me for merely being American. Until given a reason not to, I like everyone and I hope others will like me.

I asked my ex, the Englishman, why everyone hates Americans. One thing I will say about him, he is the most intelligent man I've ever met, although ludicrously supercillious at times. He did not like the French at all. He doesn't like Americans much, either. Actually, I don' t think he likes anyone but himself, quite frankly.

He said the reason people don't like Americans is sheer jealousy.

It hurt. But it makes total sense.

No offence taken!

France is something of an enigma to us Brits. Some love us, some detest us. Many of us got pissy with the French when they refused to allow British beef into the country, so many of us stopped buying their wine and switched to drinking the very passable Ozzy brew instead.

The rural French are great people, the Parisians are..well..simply horrible. I think our relationship with France will always be a love / hate affair.

I live in Quebec, and here in my little town it's 99% french. They are ALL against the war. It seems that they like Americans just for trade, and jobs and nice warm sunshine down in florida in the winter time.

Other than that, they are like the french in France.

Funny thing though, they rather Americans than English Canadians by alot.

Now you know why THEY want to seperate from Canada. (It's not about to happen though)

No, not the French, they have too much of their own culture to be jealous of a country such as America.

They're probably irritated by America's method of dealing with terrorism, but I doubt if you'll find many of the wealthier Eiropean countries who envy the US.

The Brits quite like Americans generally. We're intrigued by the hospitality, the get up and go, skyscrapers, Disneyworld and the high quaility of service that is available. We don't like the incuriousness of the US much, and feel that the legal system has little in common with real justice.

Difficult to generalise about an entire nation, in fact you can't.

My wife is french and I am in France every other month so believe I can least have a measure of objectivity on the subject.

The vandalism of war graves is about as much a sign of French attitudes as the daubing of Swastikas on a Jewish grave in Britian would be of the British frame of mind.

As to the French peoples general dislike of America to a degree that could be true , but this has to do with the protection of France cultural heritage which is very strong.They dislike the idea of infereir products , foods ,films and such things taking over from the higher quality than is readily available in their own country.Unlike Britian there are far fewer chain stores , fast food outlets and such things.They see these (rightly in my mind) as a dumbing down of society and see America as the biggest offender in this regard.

Of cource there are many other factors involved and within france many different ideas and tastes.They dont hate America they just dont want to BE American.
