We have some sort of ice falling in KC. We are not having a thunder storm that I know of (no lightning, thunder) so I am assuming it is sleet since it is 39 degrees according to my outdoor gauge. Has anybody ever seen dime size sleet? Or could this be hail?

I have disconnected my cable and can't pick up a TV signal worth watching. So, I am curious.

not to answer your question...just to brag a bit....had a bit of fog and rain this morning...it was lovely sitting out on the balcony watching everything get washed green....comfortable temp for shorts....now the clouds had left and the sun is shining and it is 72 degrees in beautiful Austin, Texas and I am headed outside to get some SUNSHINE

Sounds like what Canadian weathermen refer to as freezing rain pellets.

    Xena,

I hope you have a spare bedroom. Guess who's coming to visit?

Enjoy your lovely day. I can visualize the sun shining on your golden hair.....lovely.

Thanks for verifying that my temperature gauge is correct. Hey, you changed your post. Nevermind. I agree, it must be freezing rain, just big chunks of freezing rain. lol When are you going to send me another love letter?

I have never heard of freezing rain pellets, but that does describe what was going on outside a few minutes ago. Thanks!

    Rob,

We just had 2 whole days of that crap here. I want winter to end so I can get off my butt again and get back to work.

    Sargon,

Do you do seasonal work? I don't blame you about wanting winter to end. We have had such beautiful weather for the last few weeks. The flowers were blooming, everything smelled lovely, and now this.

    Robyn,

What you experienced could be either sleet or hail. Is a dime at least 0.2 inches in diameter??

All I can say is "what the hail".

Here's what the "American Heritage Dictionary" says:

    HAIL:

Precipitation in the form of spherical or irregular pellets of ice larger than 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) in diameter.

    SLEET:

    1.

Precipitation consisting of generally transparent frozen or partially frozen raindrops.
    2. A mixture of rain and snow or hail.
    3. A thin icy coating that forms when rain or sleet freezes, as on trees or streets.

    Sheila,

You also live about 10 miles from me. You know how the weather is in Missouri. And it only lasted about 5 minutes. But there was ice of some sort mixed with rain. And the wind was really blowing. But there was no lightning or thundering here. I am glad that you were spared so far.

    I just heard Thunder

LOLOL, are you sure that isn't Thunder Rider coming in do a little Sheila Riding?
