Imagine you or a loved one have to go onto a ventilator and are given the choice of how it should be powered. What are people picking?

    • Coal or Oil powered energy
    • Nuclear powered energy
    • Renewable powered energy (solar, wind or wave)

Are as many people going to demand that things be switched to renewables when the chips are really down.

I think the greenest of the green are picking either of the first two.

There are those who are pushing for alternative power alternatives even though they may currently use the existing grid for the most part. I'm sure at this time, they'd want their care facility to go with the power source that is readily available and has a proven track record because for the most part, that's all we have right now. Although they may have concerns with the long term effects and or viability of what we currently have, I'm sure they'd agree that experimenting with alternatives during a pandemic is a bad idea.

I guessing you already knew this but couldn't resist this unusual circumstance to rub someone's nose in it a little.

I bought acreage and it had no power or services. Energex, my state power supply could bring power for 80-100k. There were 3-4 property owners that would potentially use the power, so that 100k would be dived between us all, but only one other owner was keen to pitch in.
After researching I went with an off grid solar system, and I’m very glad I did. Not cheap, but for 40k, I’ve got a stand alone system and it’s all ready survived storms, one major one that saw thousands of people in my district without power, so it’s more reliable than grid for myself. I had cricket ball sized hail land on my panels and they survived 100% in tact, it produces more than enough power to run a family home daily my batteries stay pretty full constantly.
I’m no greenie but it is seriously the best thing I’ve ever done

I think renewables are a luxury option when the world is oil-powered. One thing we should recognize is the sheer volume of medical treatments, equipment and facilities that are directly oil based.

Yes, how a ventilator is powered is a direct and in-your-face comparison, but we shouldn't forget that all the equipment itself is oil based (plastics etc...)

That's before you even get to production of medicines and vaccines etc...

    back-up power: dieser diesel generator.

Obviously, I have two diesel motor vehicles and a tractor that runs diesel, so I’m buying gallons of the shit anyway, but haven’t needed to run a generator for power.

I’ve got no moral problem with burning fuel, if you see me driving it’s obvious.

The thing with renewables, and I could go on but I won’t, is that our state and federal governments invented botch schemes, miserable failures that are screwing everyone over, we all pay more and it does nothing whatsoever for the environment.

Now they are busy inventing schemes to fix the covid19 crisis, god help us all

I think those who support power alternatives are the first to admit that what we currently have has worked well so far and they are only too aware of the oil based sources things come from. Even so, they'd likely choose to use current power sources despite the problems that concern them because for now, that's all we have and now wouldn't be the time to switch to renewables, (which is what the original rather obvious question was).

I'd also guess, they'd be the first to recognize that although alternatives need to be found, there are more immediate concerns to focus on rather than arguing about it or trying to score easy points for ones side of an issue during a pandemic.

    It's a bit silly question.

Would those in favor of coal and oil refuse a ventilator powered by 'green' electricity when they need it?

And you who don't want to be stabbed with a knife in the streets, would you still refuse being slit open by a surgeon when you need surgery? No? Ha, hypocrite!

I think 'gotcha' questions like these are disingenuous and don't help us make a better world together.

To add: for each choice to be made today, I would choose the best available (or even only available) option. In the mean time I'd be in favor of working towards having more and better options available in the future.
