With me it was always music. I came home from work one day and found my mother going through my LPs and throwing whatever SHE thought was offensive into a great big garbage bag. Now I was a serious collecter and had alot of music and she through it all away. And of course I had to just stand there and say nothing while she did it.(That was because of my good JW/Southern upbringing).

Fast forward to many years later I come to visit with wife and children. I have a Prince T-Shirt she didn't like. While I was out visiting friends I come back to find it in the trash. But this time I took it out and I still have it to this day. Talk about extreme.

One of the elders used to follow my sister and me home from the bookstudy when we were about 14 and 15, to make sure we didn't go rollerskating, because it was filled with "worldly people"........let's see, what else.............my girlfriend's mother was a total fanatic and made her get rid of records like Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin", Mac Davis' "Baby, Baby, don't get Hooked On Me", Blondies "Call Me" and other similar music because they all "lead to fornication"..................

She also wasn't allowed to wear bluejeans to highschool (not sure why), and she was not allowed to ever wear shorts to school, less any of the boys start looking at her with passion in their hearts..........

Hey Diamond, wasn't one of Richard Pryor's wives a JW?

When I was growing up I was not allowed to listen to any music except approved Broadway musicals (mostly the old ones), some light classical, anything from the '40's, and Lawrence Welk (yes, you may pity me for that last one). I did not even hear a Beatles song or anything rock-related until 1972. Naturally, my parents saw to it that I didn't have my own radio, no allowance, and shopping trips only when they took me, so I couldn't even sneak anything into the house. In 1972 we were flying from Tokyo to LA, and I took the oh-so-private headphones and tuned into the contemporary music channel on the airplane. I heard the most wonderful things! My favorite was the Fifth Dimension's "Aquarius." That opened up a whole new world for me and as soon as we moved back to the U.S. I acquired my own little radio and played catch-up on music for a few years.

    Rock on!
