Hey Elsewheres... good for you. I had the same problem two weeks ago and it set me back 120 bucks. I was told a/c repair is something you shouldn't handle yourself. Who knew there was a kit?
I fixed my car's A/C :-D

Usually the average person should not try to fix an AC... you have to deal with welding, compressors, condensers, pressure gauges and all sorts of other difficult things. All I did was put some freon in the system... that’s like putting water in your radiator... very easy.
$120 ouch! Yeah, done that too. I've had the compressor go out and had to have it replaced. I would definitely not try to do that on my own.
Bikerchic, those kits can be found in the automotive department at Walmart, Kmart, sears, etc. You can also go to AutoZone. Just remember, I got lucky and didn't have any major problems... i just put a little extra freon in the system. The kits come with very good directions, and if she has any questions, the people at a place like Autozone are more than willing to help her out.

Air conditioning in your house? Do people really have air conditioning in their houses over there???

AC in the house? Absolutely!
Come and visit when the temp it 100 degrees F with 90% humidity... trust me... you will be begging me to turn on the AC.
Ever see one of those cowboy movies that show someone sweating beads in the hot glaring sun with horse flies buzzing around? I don't think movie watchers really appreciate what that feels like until they actually experience it.

Elsewhere, I take it if you bought the stuff yourself you put in R134a. Go have the car checked for a leak because it won't be in there long.
Mike.

I was thinking about that... but the AC was not working right last summer when I first got the car (used). It never got worst, just stayed the same and the pressure that I measured was just a little low. I'm hoping that it was just a fluke... but you may be right. Time will tell. The Freon that I put in said that it would stop leaks, so if there is a minor leak I am hoping this stuff will fix it.

Are there any places that I can take it to where they will pass one of their "sniffer" sensors around for free?

Thanks Elsewhere! I appreciate your reference to the Yahoo repair page. Hadn't thought of going there.
Its getting warm here and I'm running the a/c all the time during the day so overheating isn't a problem. Will get Ole Stinkerbelle into the shop for a new fan switch. Thanks again!
