I think many middle-aged and older ones probably get trapped like that. They can't admit that they wasted 10 or 15 years of their adult life and need to cut their losses. They would rather not think about it and caryr on regardless.
Whatever age you are, leaving is better and 1 or 2 years out really does make a world of difference to your quality of life.
