When did the world develop many different languages?

(Genesis 11:1,6-9) In the days of Babel, generations after the Flood, the world had one common language. God "confused the tongues" to create many.

(Genesis 10:5) Prior to Babel, the Bible speaks of many "nations", each with its own language ?

Linguistic studies are interesting. Linguists have tried to trace the proto language, supposedly the original language. But there are some tongues, like that of the basques, that have nothing in common w others. All it really takes for language diversification is isolation. Papua new guinie is an example of this. With scarce resources and rugged terrain, hostilities between the different tribes maintained. Living in different valleys, w mountains separating them, each tribe developed it's own language. God had nothing to do w it. Nice fairy tale, though, up there w greek mythologies and witches riding on brooms.

SS who knows that witches ride in cars and fly on airplanes

    LOL SS,

My point was the contradiction . All people were of one language .....before the tower of babel happened. This scripture showed there were "other languages" BEFORE the tower of babel.

They made a tower that would escape a flood - didn't trust God - and in that their 'language' would become the same - like jwism - don't trust Him - need to 'nail Him down' - their spiritual language becomes the same.

    Better to scatter them.

    Valis,

Thanks but no thanks. I prefer not to do any actual research on my own. All I need to know is given to me by my failful and discrete slave at the appropriate time. If I need to know about language, I'm sure a nice Awake! article will be published in the magazine.

    LOL, GAG, PUKE....

gumby, I've read the scriptures you quote, and yes, there is an apparent contradiction. I have no other research tools at my disposal at this time though. You do bring up an interesting point.

Here is a site I just found. Not too sure on how well researched it is, but it brings up a lot of points on this. It does show the inconsistancy of the language issue you bring up.

Also, the proper dubs response would be they brought with them their actual tongues, not languages. LOL
