I knew quite a few who were elders only to fulfil thier Egos, by contoliing others. Some were genuinely service oriented and humble (Brainwashed of course)

min, I have to say I was not the only elder's wife whose husband handled it that way. It was a way for elders to abuse wives using their husbands as the cudgel. If Deborah could judge in the nation of Israel, they could come and talk to be directly if there was a problem. I found that those with complaints were always nameless so that you couldn't apply Mt 18:15-17. There is no mention of going through a husband for a sister to do this. Two sisters in Paul's day were told to work out their differences, no mention of husbands involved. That's what he pointed out to them.
Remember I was a woman and there was little they could take away. We never fit in their gossipy social circle which proved to us we were on the right road to a caring personality.
