BCE and CE were also used in the former communist part of Germany (the former "German Democratic Republic"). They as an atheist state wanted to get rid of all expressions reminding of religious topics.
This difference is one example how language changed during 40 years of separation betwen East and West Germany.
When I as a JW used BCE (v.u.Z. = vor unserer Zeitrechnung) at school someone asked me if I was raised in the GDR. :-)
