    Maya Angelou

Dr. Maya Angelou, described as a Renaissance woman who is hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary literature, will speak at SCSU Tuesday, April 29. The event is at 7:30 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall.

The poet, educator, historian, best-selling author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director continues to travel the world for speaking engagements.

Angelou's poems include "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" and "Phenomenal Woman." She has written and produced several prize winning documentaries, original screeplays and a 10-part TV series on African traditions in American life. She is currently a professor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

Angelou's performance/lecture stresses the value of diversity in all undertakings. She challenges her audiences to invest their spirit in elevating the human condition.

Critics say that, within the rhythm of her poetry and the elegance of her prose, Angelou helps readers of every orientation span the lines of race.

Cost is $5 for everyone except SCSU students, who may receive two free tickets with an SCSU ID. For tickets, call 320-255-2205.

    Here 'go:

    A free bird leaps
on the back of the win
    and floats downstream
    till the current ends
    and dips his wings
    in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

    But a bird that stalks

    down his narrow cage
    can seldom see through
    his bars of rage
    his wings are clipped and
    his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

    The caged bird sings

    with fearful trill
    of the things unknown
    but longed for still
    and is tune is heard
on the distant hillfor the caged bird
    sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze

an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

    The caged bird sings

    with a fearful trill
    of things unknown
    but longed for still
    and his tune is heard
    on the distant hill
    for the caged bird
    sings of freedom.

(It's nice to hear her read it)

While I am sure you put in the little wink and smiley face to make your very offensive remark less offensive, it didn’t work. There was no need for it, and it was hurtful. I respectfully request that remarks like that not be put on a public forum.

    get over yourself.

please. seriously the world can't bear people w/o humor.

It's sad when people make hurtful remarks, and then accuse others of not having a sense of humor. However, I see that you are not willing to consider that your comment may have been offensive, so I won't say anymore about it. Just be careful that you don't ever take offense at anyone else's attempt at "humor", because then you will be quite the hypocrite.

By the way, Joannadandy, hope you enjoy the show, sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I love her books and poetry, you should have a great time.

There simply was nothing hurtful about the comment. People who are past racism, have a sense of humor about the differences in race and culture.

The fact that you take "race" too seriously to joke about, does not in any way mean that you aren't a racist, it does however, mean that you likely are.

You are pretty funny, sixofnine, deflecting things off and calling me a racist. I never mentioned the word, nor called you any names at all, I simply said your comment was hurtful. If you can't see that insulting a group of people (and yes, insinuating that a group of people don't know how to behave acceptably in a social setting is is insulting) is wrong, then, you aren't ready to take an objective look at yourself. So, having a sense of humor about the differences in race and culture means that all black people talk in movies? You REALLY can't see that that is, at best, an unkind remark? As though "black culture" demands that people talk during movies, or at least, that most black people talk during movies? Whatever, again, I will drop the subject. I won't respond anymore, there's no point, although I'm sure you will feel the need to "get in the last word" so have a good night.
