Just before the month ends I would like to congratulate the Watchtower magazine for completing its run of 138 years of publication. The first copy was printed July 1st 1879. Well done Watchtower!

As a reminder, let people remember that in its time this magazine has one of the world’s largest print runs for a periodical. An enviable record in the magazine industry.

Simultaneously it has to be the least read magazine in the world, in proportion to the number of copies made! That’s ‘cos only JWs can bear to read the contents. It is a truly puzzling read to non-JWs, this is because its contents are mainly Biblical threats and deeply patronizing propaganda to get the readers to conform to the will of the leadership.

Why was it not worth reading?

1/ it has never got any prediction right (and there have been many).

2/ it has never said anything original which was of any practical or spiritual use to the millions who have bought it or received it because any pronouncement has only a short shelf life.

    And worse than that;

3/ it has distinctly misled and hurt millions of JWs into believing absurd and false hopes. It derails ambition, education and sound thinking. It creates an unhealthy state of mind. It leads to being shunned and sometimes to lack of self worth, depression and suicide, it splits up families because it demands loyalty to the Watchtower above family ties whatever the emotional cost.

The publicly stated reason for printing the Watchtower magazine in the first place was to announce the Kingdom’s arrival and the total restoration of earth to paradise under the King Jesus by 1914.

Have you noticed, it didn’t happen? Have you noticed it never does happen??

It's a pulp fiction genre but without the talent or excitement..............

Interesting that I recall a certain fanfare being associated with anniversaries of the WT publication. I don't see any fanfare for this 138th anniversary let alone build up to the 140th. It's almost as if they don't want people to think about the length of time associated with the heralding of the Kingdom.

I think they only made a meal of 2014 just to try and pour water on apostates laughing at them.

It has also promoted reckless behavior including: discouraging higher education, the blood ban, fake science, and meddling in the lives of it's followers. While it recognizes freedom of religion it does not recognize freedom from (the JW) religion. It does not have a sound history of encouraging the reporting of sexual child abuse.

It is more then willing to break families apart by promoting shunning.

It's joyful prediction of Armageddon makes it a death cult. It predicts a paradise earth built on the bones of 7.5 billion men, women and children.

Woot! Happy Birthday! 138 years and still producing more crap every issue than an average sized Brontosaurus.

That issue also stated adamantly "that we would never beg nor solicit for funds" and if money was not available, then that would be a sign to stop the work, as it would show that God was not blessing the work....

However, the modern day society has no shame, and has made many "appeals" for donations!

i thought that "the hand of God was never short"? Oh except maybe he lost out during the financial crash and has no more money?

During Russell's day, I was just reading how women pioneers were campaigning for ordinary workers to receive education, for children to stay on at school instead of doing manual work before the age of 13. They campaigned that miners shouldn't have to take their dirt home with them. Katharine Glasier 1867-1950 was one such woman. she had a nervous breakdown at the age of 53 in 1920 but was back working away for change the following year and lived to the ripe old age of 83. She inspired a number of men and women to take up political careers to help the poor. all this while Russell and Rutherford were preaching ....

Yes Ruby the term pioneer as used by the Watchtower disguises the fact that the individual is a front-runner in stupidity. Effectively wasting all of your time preaching a paranoid story of global death and your own survival at the imminent end of the world.

What JWs refuse to recognize are the benefits of individuals who really lead the field in helping mankind.

They can't see outside of their jaundiced bubble.

Let's take a trip down memory lane, shall we?

"Vaccination never prevented anything and never will, and is the most barbarous practice . . . We are in the last days; and the devil is slowly losing his hold, making a strenuous effort meanwhile to do all the damage he can, and to his credit can such evils be placed. . . . Use your rights as American citizens to forever abolish the devilish practice of vaccinations." (The Golden Age, Oct. 12, 1921, p. 17)

"If any overzealous doctor condemns your tonsils go and commit suicide with a case-knife. It’s cheaper and less painful." (The Golden Age, April 7, 1926, p. 438)

"Thinking people would rather have smallpox than vaccination, because the latter sows seeds of syphilis, cancers, eczema, erysipelas, scrofula, consumption, even leprosy and many other loathsome affections. Hence the practice of vaccinations is a crime, an outrage, and a delusion" (The Golden Age, Jan. 5, 1929, p. 502)

“Vaccination has never saved a human life. It does not prevent smallpox.” (The Golden Age, Feb. 4, 1931, p. 294)

"We do well to bear in mind that among the drugs, serums, vaccines, surgical operations, etc., of the medical profession, there is nothing of value save an occasional surgical procedure. . . . Readers of The Golden Age know the unpleasant truth about the clergy; they should also know the truth about the medical profession, which sprang from the same demon worshipping shamans (doctor priests) as did the ‘doctors of divinity.’" (The Golden Age, Aug. 5, 1931, pp. 727-728)

"medicine originated in demonology and spent its time until the last century and a half trying to exorcise demons. During the past half century it has tried to exorcise germs." (The Golden Age, Aug. 5, 1931, p. 728)

“When men of science conclude that this normal process will no longer work and they suggest removing the organ and replacing it directly with an organ from another human, this is simply a shortcut. Those who submit to such operations are thus living off the flesh of another human. That is cannibalistic.” (The Watchtower, Nov. 15, 1967, p. 702)
