I think this would be a great question to ask active JWs. They love to say how the world would be so different if everyone was a JW. However, what if we flip the question and ask, would the world really be much different if the JW faith never came into existence? Any reasonable mind would be able to see that things would go on with very little difference. So then, if this is God's organization then shouldn't it be making a much bigger positive impact on the world around us?
How would the world be different if there were no JWs?

In an alternative reality, a sliding doors moment, where a guy called Chuck Russell decided to start a Pyramid Appreciation Society (instead of a bible interpretaion business) who met together once a month to talk excitedly and nerdily about the Egyptian sructures and then have a cup of coffee and cake would have avoided all the disappointments, loss of potential, poverty, suffering, mismatched marriages and needless deaths of JWs and JW kids. -

8 million jws
8 billion people (US billion)
What is that one out of 1,000 people is a jw?
Not much change except for the relatives and neighbors of jwsi
So what practical work, contributions do they make?
There would still be abuse unfortunately, in amounts greater than jw abusers

Has anyone ever worked out how many millions of trees it took to produce all the WT literature over the past 140 years?

Annually, 0.0000075 more birthday cards would be sold and 1, 375,000,000 fewer gallons of alcohol.
Apart from that, not much else would be different, given the human need to create some kind of hell on earth in the name of some Creator. For many people there is a strong psychic need to either lord it over others and/or to experience organized misery.

I never thought about all those trees being cut down to print those magazines. I remember the very first video the society produced called, "The organization behind the name", I think back in the early 1990's on VHS and they said one of those six foot huge rolls of paper would only last so many minutes on their presses.
Go figure.

Yes, more trees. But also, a few more Mormons, Church of God evangelicals, and a couple more Jonestown victims. People who would have joined the witnesses would have chosen another cult/fundamentalist religion. Others might have taken that college scholarship or opportunity to train for the Olympics.
Tho they are barely a blip on the world scene, it still feels like there would be a lot more acceptance and a lot less judgmentalism if they never existed. But people that have that need in their blood could have easily chosen a similar theology.
