One thing about Americans (and lots of others too) we can truly laugh at ourselves............at least I can.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you there, Mulan. Whilst you may be able to laugh at yourself, there is the observation that Americans take themselves far too seriously (the war topic is a recent example). The slightest hint of criticism of America or Americans is viewed as "America-bashing", and many Americans take such criticism personally, as if we were attacking them.

Maybe this applies to a possible vocal minority, but this is my observation of Americans on this board.

Possibly because of the generalizations that occur in those threads. Maybe if all the American's (can we still call ourselves that or is it still offensive to the Canadians) started a thread criticising the Aussies and Brits you'd see it differently. I'm sick of it.

We do laugh at ourselves but when you lump us all together and start criticising everything from our food to our language and even what we call ourselves, we tend to get angry.

You all deserve McDonalds. Do they really serve beer outside the States at McDonalds?

Sorry but I do take it seriously when you, for example Prisca, jump in at every opportunity and always seem to have something negative to say about my country and make such broad generalizations when you have such a limited knowledge of my country yourself.

I don't mind criticism at all when it's based on actually having a clue what it going on here. You don't. You have admitted that you'd need to look things up on the internet in order to have a discussion about the history of our country and have demonstrated such a lack of knowledge about The U.S. in general in any of the threads you have engaged in. You have also admitted that you receive most of your information about the country you like to bash FROM THE MEDIA. If you want to criticize our country at least have an idea of what you are talking about first. And if you continue to choose to jump in and spout, uninformed, then you'll continue to hear about it from those of us who are informed. It's actually pretty simple.

    Aztec:

Okay American weighing in here...Americans are dumb as bricks in general! Patriotic? Oh my lordy yeah! I think Americans are stupid in general! Look at who we elected to president...I'm shocked and in awe! ~Aztec
Oh I include myself. :) I am really stupid in regards to some topics! What I meant is that, for the most part, Americans I meet are apathetic and self-absorbed. People that I've met from other countries seem a bit less so. ~Aztec
I'm referring to the people I meet in my day to day interactions. I work in a very upscale, trendy part of the metro Detroit area and I meet a lot of people who care more about whether or not they should fire their maid than care about world issues. It's just very frutrating at times! Most of the Americans I interact with are morons.
You meet these people in a work situation and you make a judgement that they are "apathetic" and "self-absorbed" and "morons"??? You meet these people while you are working and you are seeing a mere "snapshot" of their life and you are judging them? Would you wish to be judged in any of these ways based on such a short exposure or interaction time? They are shopping and you are judging what they are like based on that little bit of exposure you have with them? I can tell you that when I'm shopping- it's pretty much about me- it's not helping out in a philanthropic way at the time or having a political debate- it's shopping. I think I recall you work in an art gallery? That is a very personal purchase, no? Imagine being "self-absorbed" about that !! OMG !!! Maybe they came back and bought some more art and acted pretty much the same way- OMG- another snapshot. They are "apathetic"?? How do you know this? Because they didn't discuss world events when they were shopping for art? Do you hang out with all of these people? Are they your friends and you've spent hours and hours with them discussing their life and their experiences and their views on the world? "Morons" with a taste for fine art. Hmm- they must have had something going for them to have made all that money- even it it is that they are smart enough to have hired the right people to do it for them. It is quite unfair to make such blanket judgements about people you meet in that type of situation. You are only seeing a very tiny piece of their life. I have spent many hours with some people I have actually befriended and it takes time to really get to know people and what they are really like. XW

"Can't we ALL just get along?"

Personally, I don't pre-judge ppl from where they are from.

I judge ppl on WHO they are. I think we should all do the same.

Just my 2 cents, (spend it the way you want) TM

    Princess,

It is pretty hard not to make generalisations in topics where opinions are being asked for. The only way of ensuring generalisations never ever happen is to have scientific studies made. Is that what you want? After all, the most generalised group of people on this board are JWs. Frequently broad-brush statements are made regarding JWs, but no one worries about that! How many times are statements made such as, "All JWs are evil" or, "All JWs are idiots for believing what they do". Yet I rarely see anyone (especially the generalising-hating Americans) getting upset over generalisations made about JWs!

    XenaWarrior,

In your replies to both me and Axtec, you made blanket statements, something you claim shouldn't be done. Axtec made comments based on her own observations, yet you belittle them, based on assumptions you have. Don't you see the hypocrisy in what you wrote to her? Not to mention your laughable assessment about my observations and knowledge of American culture/history/sociology. Honey, I dare say that every one of the Australians/Poms on this board know more about your country than you will ever know about ours.

America is a highly visable country, a country whose actions affect many millions more than just those living in the USA. Thus, the country is held up to scutiny, not to mention those who live in it.

I think we should take all the pathetic, miserable, petty, small-minded, criminal types and give them jobs in Congress....Hey, wait, we did that already! To all you foreigners, tell you what, I promise not to judge you based on the actions of your sportsman/women, politicians, actors, entertainers, and business people if you'll do me and my country the same courtesy! Fair enough? Maverick
