Before Frazier, Ali had two tune-up fights against top contenders who had similar styles as Joe - Jerry Quarry and Oscar Bonavena. Ali beat both, and had hundreds of rounds sparring in the gym. His weight for Joe was a trim and ready 215 lbs. Ali fought Joe in March 1971 and had recently turned 29 in January 1971.
No excuses - Ali was as good as he could be, but lost.
