I would recommend "how democracies die" as reading for this moment. Court packing marks the end of a dying democracy. After the courts have been packed, everything becomes legal for the ruling class.
The democrats can say what the like. A 6:3 supermajority in the court is not only what the voters want, but it will ensure issues such as voter fraud and other subversive activities can be dealt with efficiently. I suspect this may be necessary to guarantee a desirable outcome of this election.

Trump might nominate someone. It's up to Mitch McConnell to bring the nominee to the Senate for confirmation. I can't see that happening before the election.
Ginsburg was nominated (by Bill Clinton) and confirmed in only 43 days with a vote 93-3 (those were the days of cooperation/compromise).
So there is time for Mitch to "get 'er done".
