gcc2k asked "WHAT IS THE CURRENT VIEW"

I still don't think gcc and pork chop get it!

The point isn't about whether the "current view" is correct. The point is that God's spokesman first pronounced mental health care to be wrong. If the "current view" for these past 13 years is silence (but not a recommendation) who's viewpoint changed -- man's or God's? Certainly NOT God's. So is the WTBTS really God's only channel to mankind on earth? If they were promoting a viewpoint at any time that was not Jehovah God's/Biblical, then by the very Word of God of which they claim to be the sole correct interpreters, they have made themselves false prophets.

Whether it's the current view, present truth, past light that is wrong, as long as they claim to speak for God and flip-flop they prove themselves to be anything BUT God's spokesorganization.

JT was explaining the wider picture here, guys.

As far as I know now, and I don't have the CD with me. They are more lenient saying that modern counselors can be good treatment, but we need to be very careful not to let them influence our beliefs and never to undergo hypnosis. They still strongly suggest you not see a psychotherapist unless it is extremely necessicary, like bi-polar disorder or extreme chronic depression or something like that. I went to see a psychotherapist and couldn't tell my parents, so it must still be a strongly held belief.

    waiting says:

JT's right in encouraging you to read, think, ponder. Read some more. There's a vast wealth of information on the web and in books. Current books with up-to-date quotes for you. There's a whole website called appropriately "Quotes" which is nothing but that....for people like you.

This is the problem with people making generalized statements about others on this site - you don't know the person you are talking about.
I've read the quotes site, generally very good except for running off course in a few areas.

I am inactive BECAUSE of the changes and new light, specifically the generation change. It was the first time I directly had been affected by a shift in policy, leaving me to wonder how these people could be receiving divine direction.

I am not, as others have suggested, a reformer. However, if the Society announced tomorrow that several major doctrines were now a conscience matter, opened up their financial records, and offered a copy of the private files to their respective owners, I might consider coming back to meetings. Fat chance, right?

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience in therapy. I know of several people, all in good standing, who are in therapy today. Some opted for a JW therapist, others are seeing "worldly" people. I myself saw a therapist a few years ago (worldly). The thing you will not get with a JW therapist is an exploration of things you might want to do, but know are wrong. For example, my therapist discussed a few possible courses of action with me and then brought up one I left out. "Why not have an affair?" "Because I know it's wrong."

I think everyone is entitled to get the professional help they need, medical, mental or otherwise, and it's no one else's business, elders or not.

    hello gcc,

Yeah, assumptions are made when we read other's posts. I doubt any of us have time to read ALL posts by other posters. For instance, have you read ALL my posts? If you have, then you, poor person, have little else to do in your life.

Glad you went to Quotes.....many fine sites to find pertinent information....and up-to-date quotes on New Light. Btw, the WTBTS themselves quote older publications of their own (or scientific views when it helps them) - and we jw's didn't think much about it. If the WTBTS quoted it....it must still be correct insight, eh? And I NEVER heard a jw ask "where did they get that quote....exactly?" Like the WTBTS would write (paraphrasing) "A Catholic woman said she was very upset because the Catholic Church changed their teaching that now Catholics could eat meat on Fridays. 'If they can change that teaching, what else is going to change? How can we have faith with all these changes?" Remember that article? Exactly which Catholic woman said that? The WT writings are littered with inuendos.

The thing you will not get with a JW therapist is an exploration of things you might want to do, but know are wrong. For example, my therapist discussed a few possible courses of action with me and then brought up one I left out. "Why not have an affair?" "Because I know it's wrong." -gcc

The woman jw therapist in Boca Raton I went to wouldn't treat any jw or worldly person with homosexual tendencies. Why? Because, scripturally, they were wrong. She also had jw patients sign a statement beforehand that if they spoke of anything exposing "serious sin" - she would be honor bound to "speak to the elders" - REPORT - them.

So, in essence, I agree with you. Going to a jw therapist while being a jw doesn't allow a person to fully speak about themselves, unless the jw and his family, etc., is pretty much sinless in his actions, heart, mind & body....doesn't doubt the WTBTS, FDS class, elders, teachings, jw history, etc.

In others words - a jw better pick their words carefully if they don't want to be reported for sin violations.....because the point of much therapy is to speak about the things in your mind & heart.

Btw, "exploration of things you might want to do, but know are wrong" isn't the extent of it. It has been shown that hypnosis does help in behavior modification (smoking, extreme negativity, etc.), and many people don't consider it "wrong".....but I seriously doubt that a jw therapist would encourage.....or just downright discourage......such a form of accepted treatment.

    Glad you're sticking around

One of the elders on my dad's committee censored him for seeing a psychiatrist and told him that it would lead to mind control (or some such nonsense). My understanding of the current view is that it's a conscience matter, but like all dealings with Evil Worldly People, a very suspicious thing to do (i.e., why can't you just go out in service more? then you'll feel better!).

As for the matter of quoting old literature, my boss, who is a very respected appellate lawyer, frequently quotes law from the 1800's that is still good, so it's just a matter of doing research to find out if said law has been superseded by another one.

I think I'd REPORT her, to the state licensing board. I'm sure they would love to hear of this "therapist" breaking doctor/patient confidentiality like that.

Bless your heart waiting, no wonder you had so much anger toward psychology. There is nothing worse than a therapist who has their own agenda. So much damage can be done and so quickly.

When I was going through my abuse issues I ran through 8 or 9 before I finally found a good one. But, just my luck, after 18 months she betrayed my trust. It hurt terribly and I've never been back to see anyone. I kind of finished my recovery myself, which is why my inner self looks like the Elephant Man.

    hey tex,

    Thanks for the warmth!

It was about 3 yrs in total before I'd venture to another therapist....and I was truly looking - just didn't know how to do it. Oh, I asked when I was at lectures, etc., but was always given the "Look at credentials, recommendations, etc." I did that with Virginia M..

But then I was at a lecture by a therapist from Columbia, SC - Jemmee Stewart. Almost identical credentials & recommendations.........but the women were totally different. I tried Jemmee.....and stayed with her for over a year. She didn't try to run my life, my mind, etc, and treated me as an equal - we just agreed she knew a whole lot more than me. If I went back to therapy, I'd go back to her. Btw, "went through" 3 therapists & 3 psychiatrists. Don't like to deal with men in those capacities at all.

"Elephant Man" eh? Yeah, I can relate. Have you seen that new movie "Identity"? lol - go see it. My husband would just look at me sideways after the movie.....I swore I saw him shudder a couple of times, particularily when I laughed.

I wish you well - time & space for healing do wonders. You've obviously done a lot of work.....gaining the self-esteem necessary to walk into a restaurant with a plaid skirt on!

    Take care -

    waiting
