    ....but not for JW's!

w70 4/15 p. 250 -"In 1870 Charles Taze Russell...was not satisfied with the sectarian [JW's are sectarian] explanations of the Bible given him, so he started a Bible-study class with several of his friends...."

km 9/07 p. 3 Question Box - "Does “the faithful and discreet slave” endorse independent groups of Witnesses who meet together to engage in Scriptural research or debate? No, it does not. And yet, in various parts of the world, a few associates [fellow Christians????] of our organization have formed groups to do independent research on Bible-related subjects.”

Notice that though the quote of the KM article says that “the faithful and discreet slave” does not endorse independent groups of Witnesses doing independent Bible research, the quote does not say the “the faithful and discreet slave” forbids or condemns JWs from doing such. It does not state a prohibition on JWs doing such research.

Tell them you are doing independent research and you will be told to limit your research to watchtower publications.

They take popular subjects being commented on by churches and plagiarize it. I did extra reading on the fornication root word which was just additional materialfrom their sources and got squelched

The KM article (as posted on the org's website) also mentions the following.

"Some have pursued an independent group study of Biblical Hebrew and Greek so as to analyze the accuracy of the New World Translation. Others explore scientific subjects related to the Bible. They have created Web sites and chat rooms for the purpose of exchanging and debating their views. They have also held conferences and produced publications to present their findings and to supplement what is provided at our Christian meetings and through our literature.

... It is commendable for individuals to want to use their thinking ability in support of the good news. However, no personal pursuit should detract from what Jesus Christ is accomplishing through his congregation on earth today.

... For those who wish to do extra Bible study and research, we recommend that they explore Insight on the Scriptures, “All Scripture Is Inspired of God and Beneficial,” and our other publications, such as those that discuss the prophecies found in the Bible books of Daniel, Isaiah, and Revelation."

That has been the view of the WTS for decades now. If you are not a JW, they encourage you to question your religious leaders and beliefs because the truth will always shine through. If you are a JW, they strongly discourage questioning anything or trying study on your own, because truth only belongs to the GB. Many of their statements about searching for truth are contradictory like that. Question everything until you become a JW, then question nothing... or else.

REALITY CHECK: Any JW's who openly "ignore the G.B.'s "recommendation" in that Kingdom Ministry, will find themselves being seriously "counselled" by the congregation's wolves. Anyone who thinks otherwise..........

Original poster, I don't see your point.

Jesus prophesied that Russell would study and start a new group of preachers and teachers. It is not a matter of independent study but the sifting of the weeds from the wheat and study is what does the sifting. However those who leave JWs because of their so-called study aren't doing what Jesus stated.
