Well, it could mean John has the choice to live forever in some spiritual realm, or come back to the earth (reincarnation/rebirth?) whereupon he'll die again. If he's feeling good where he is, well, he might as well stay there. But does he really have a choice?

All I am seeing is a Red X.
However, if it is the picture I am thinking about (from the graveyard near St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal) read the first letters of each line for the real message of the epitaph.
