The way Japanese soldiers raped and murdered their way through north east China during WWII defies description. It is no wonder they are hated in China.

Cofy is of course correct but those deep cultural divisions predated the world wars even.

A couple of very kind and loving Chinese people I know certainly haven't forgotten about the Japanese - I've heard the horror.

The Japanese were a similar cult and barbaric culture that was transformed by WWII and a couple of atom bombs into a rather peaceful / low-crime one today.

Those hoping for China to intervene and wondering why they don't - do you imagine that they want a heavily armed border directly with the US? That's one reason they don't take action against NK.

Also, North and South Korea (and therefore the US as it is one of the antagonists) are still technically at war - the Korean war never ended, there was no armistice, just a halt to the conflict. The war hasn't been raging for the last few decades but it's not really been "peace".

Not to nit pick simon, because i agree with you largely, but there was an armistice in the korean war (july of 1953). There was no peace treaty, just the armistice that ended the war and established the dmz.

Yes, I used the wrong word - the point is the war never really ceased, it was just suspended. There has never been a real "peace" between the two sides (which includes the US who've continued to back South Korea).

Absolutely... but this is why the war was fought to begin with, to prevent china from having an unimpeded foothold on the region. South korea has flourished, north korea is a hell hole. I fault dwight for giving in and not finishing it and the world community as whole for quiting, although in the wake of WW2 the lack of appetite for armed conflict is understandable. china has been agressive in the south sea, built up their military to huge degrees and fought cyber wars since the internets inception. They have waged and are waging a trade war (that they are winning) with the Us and the west as whole... letting them have the whole the peninsula would have been a disaster, one even greater the current mess.

Morpheus - I was wondering the same thing about Dwight - his tenaciousness waned.

So all the Presidents and their cabinets have been letting it slide (during their term - isn't that sweet!) until it's now out of control? Hopefully, it will be resolved in a peaceful manner - too many lives at stake. Trump has commented all options are on the table and I'm going to take that as a positive for peaceful resolution. Too scary.

I'm not interpreting President Trump's statement in a logical way but this is not good.

Everything is possible but I don't think that there will be war with NK. Economic sanctions do not work. Only option at this point in time for US is to compromise with NK or take out their leader.
