Religulous Woke Me Up

There are many people that get their wake up call one way or another.

For me, I was bored and went to Netflix. On there was a documentary called, "Religulous". I watched it and that started my search. IF you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend it.

I was raised a JW and I always wished I was able to find "the truth" on my own, vs being born into it. Well, I got my wish! Not the wish I thought of at the time but I was able to learn the truth on my own. Except it was that religion is a snare and a racket!

It's a great flick, and what I liked was the fact that Maher held nothing sacred, not even his own Jewish heritage.

    .

And yup, he truly showed the underbelly of religion (how 'bout those snake charmers?). :)

Definitely a good documentary. I didn't see it until after I'd been awake (and honestly, I don't know that it would've done the trick for me back when I was more or less fully in) but it's definitely a good watch. Especially for those who are leaving and asking the "where do I go" question, or those that are still wrestling with doubts about leaving.

    Wasn't Maher raised Catholic, Talesin?

I could be wrong. (too lazy to google lol)

True, Cappy, in his early years. That is why I said 'heritage' - if your mother is a Jew, so are you. The Jewish tradition is matriarchal in that way. Good question. : )

It's good but Maher does have some things that are wrong. I didn't dare to watch that movie until after I was out. Guess I was really indoctrinated.

Now I know you're having a laugh. That was the most crass nonsense film I ever watched. And I say that as an liberal atheist sceptic!

    Religulous? Ridiculous!

I don't consider the movie a documentary as much as a comedian's jab at the ridiculousness of 'true believers'. Maher found some real doozies to interview and showcase.

As pointed out, it does have some factual mistakes. I remember thinking at the time that Maher and his writers didn't do a good job of fact checking their some of the assertions. I think it was his comparison of legend of Horus vs the legend of Jesus, that raised an eyebrow for me.

But still I enjoyed it. I like Bill Maher, even when he goes too far, or I don't agree with everything he says. And knowing that he's a comedian, I went into it knowing he was going to make fun of religious people, and it wasn't going to be a true documentary, PBS style.

He made the idea of religion look completely crazy. It made me start to think that what I believed was completely crazy.

Most offensive I found was his treatment of mythicism. I think there's a reasonable case to be made for mythicism. Maher completely garbled it. Really annoying.
