Remember, they were in NY during the time that Egyptology was a big rave in the US. (They even stuck an obelisk in NYC.) For some silly reason, the Bible students and even the Mormon Smith were all stuck on Egypt being some key to the Bible. For the bible students, it was about calculating the date for the rapture.
All moon bat crazy New Yorkers obsessed with Egypt and astrology. Recall that whole god lives in Pleiades silliness?
I watched this recently and I could not help it but think that these people are over a 100 years in the past. I guess some theories die hard.

That point marks the birth of our Lord Jesus as the "Well," 33 inches farther on, indicates his death So, then, if we measure backward down the "First Ascending Passage" to its junction with the " Entrance Passage," we shall have a fixed date to mark upon the downward passage. This measure is 1542 inches, and indicates the year B. C. 1542, as the date at that point. Then measuring down the " Entrance Passage" from that point, to find the distance to the entrance of the "Pit," representing the great trouble and destruction with which this age is to close, when evil will be overthrown from power, we find it to be 3457 inches, symbolizing 3457 years from the above date, B. c.1542. This calculation shows A. D. 1915 as marking the beginning of the period of trouble; for 1542 years B. c. plus 1915 years A. D. equals 3457 years. Thus the Pyramid witnesses that the close of 1914 will be the beginning of the time of trouble such as was not since there was a nation - no, nor ever shall be afterward. And thus it will be noted that this " Witness" fully corroborates the Bible testimony on this subject, as shown by the "Parallel Dispensations" in SCRIPTURE STU DIES VOL. 11.. Chap. vii.
In a nut shell Russell embraced the 19th century foolishness of that time and built a religion around it. Some of his ideas, all borrowed from others are still used in the JW construct but his books are no longer published and best left forgotten.
Rutherford embraced the concept of the door to door salesmen of his era (He sold encyclopedias door to door for a while). Working a territory, counting sales and putting in the required time and built a religion around that. He also chased away, what some estimated, 70% of the membership ie. the International Bible Students. His lectures and books his bombasticness are no longer part of the JW construct.........
Both men had seriously failed marriages and a predilection for making serious mistakes. Neither would have qualified morally to serve as Elders in a local congregation based on their beliefs and life style.
