    I know..

Its just one of those extreme weather conditions which nobody had no control of. Understandable.

There wasn't much anybody could do.

    More prevalent these days

    Extreme weather events.

    Terrible thing. Tragic.

All they have to do is put a big bull horn in every camp that goes off anytime say 3 inches or more falls upriver in a sort period of time.

Getting to higher ground is easy to do in almost every area of the river. We are only talking about 30 feet. (only one spot raised 50 feet) This isn't rocket science.

When all the politicians get finished congratulating themselves on what a good job they have done in retrieving bodies, maybe some lawmaker will introduce some statewide legislation requiring such an early warning system.

My town has it - bull horns and all. Now we just need to make it statewide.

@SB: there is a cost to that, as you said it happens once every 200 years, smaller events happen every 50 years or so. Sounds like a feel-good solution, and 20 years from now it goes unmaintained because it doesn’t ever go off or get used and then 50 or 200 years from now we will have the same problem.

And as I said before, getting 30ft higher wouldn’t have helped, the river raised 1ft/minute and it’s not a steep incline, I saw some of the videos and I looked at topographical maps, 50ft higher was 100s of feet if not miles away, people in general, even if alarms went off would not have made it to safety in time, the towns are purposely built on a flat plane, all humans have historically lived in areas that were near water and easy to build upon. Yes that brings a risk, whether it is hurricanes or floods, but if our species had chosen to be scared and live in the mountains, not near water, at higher elevation, then we wouldn’t be here, the Nile flood(ed) all of Egypt annually, it was also the sole reason for its rise to power.
