Mandatory Donations??? Is This Accurate?

Does the information about mandatory donations in this post sound accurate to you?

It seems a little suspicious since it is coming from a new poster who signed up just to give us this information. I would be a lot more comfortable with a long time,well known poster doing this. The same applies to this site.

The Elders letter you just sent out says that the Congregation Elders need to get together to decide if the suggested amount is okay or whether they need to lower or increase the amount. Once that is decided, they need to get a resolution from the Congregation for that amount. The wording in the letter states that the money will come from monthly donations made to the local Congregation.

Because the Elders are required to get a resolution from the Congregation, this now obligates them to donate that stated amount. I agree with the reddit poster, it becomes mandatory (as a Congregation).

There is no date for how long this resolution is to last and there is no provision for the Elders to review that amount.

It seems to be a loose interpretation of the s147-20.08 regarding

"adjustment to resolved congregation donations" paragraphs 6 and 7.

6. Adjustment to Resolved Congregation Donations: The resolved monthly donation referred to in the announcement for congregations is based on a monthly per-publisher amount suggested by the branch office. The single monthly donation to the worldwide work will replace the resolved donations previously remitted in support of Kingdom Hall and Assembly Hall construction worldwide, the Global Assistance Arrangement, and any branch-specific arrangements. Instructions for Congregation Accounting (S-27), related accounting forms, and the Funds Transfer page on jworg will be updated in due course.

7. The per publisher amount listed on the jworg web page containing the link to this announcement should be multiplied by the number of active publishers in the congregation to determine the suggested monthly donation for your congregation. It is understood that some congregations will not be able to donate the suggested amount while others will be able to donate more. Therefore, the body of elders should consider whether the suggest- ed amount would impose a hardship on the congregation or the congregation is in a posi- tion to donate the suggested amount or more. The monthly donation agreed upon by the body of elders should be presented in a resolution to the congregation for approval. Please note that the resolved donation should be sent on a monthly basis and not as a single amount for the service year.

Thank you for your comments on this! It just seems that with so many JW's out of work, asking for donations is like telling them to make bricks without straw.
