You are right that the Witnesses should worry about the here and now and providing for themselves financially for the rest of their short lives. Instead, many still hang onto their pipe dream.
So sad, that many JWs never learned how to function in the real world. Instead, they got low paid/low hour jobs usually from other JWs because they didn't WANT to rub shoulders with so called worldly people. The shit has hit the fan though for older JWs since the End hasn't come and they need to retire.
At least younger JWs can see their predicament and can do something now while they're still young enough to do it. I always said I didn't want to be around Witnesses when reality hit them. Well, it HAS hit them and I'm glad I long ago bailed out of this hypocrital religion...Nobody's coming near ME with any envelope for contributions for these people who listened to the religion's bad advice and refused to plan.
