[High-fives Joannadandy!!!] You're going to teach English -- terrific! Your student teaching should be a good forecasting of what it's like.

Most starting teachers make 20-25,000. By the time you retire you can expect to make 45,000.

In my district, teachers are hired at $32,000 ($35,500 with a masters) and usually retire at about $75,000 or more. In two years I'll receive a $14,000 raise. It all depends on what state you live in.

I am an elementary teacher in Chicago.

I would definiterly not recomment teaching as a first option in a career.

Teaching has become more bureaucratic than pedagogic.

I’m not a teacher but I have looked into the career a bit as a ‘fall-back’ option. Two bits of advice I have for you first, major in a science not history. There are lots of history teachers looking for work, the sciences will make you a bit more competitive. Second, unless you the type of guy that is very comfortable and can communicate very well with urban teens stay out of the inner city schools.

    Bradley,

I have been a teacher for many years. Forget the naysayers. If you want to become a teacher, go for it. However, if you think you are going to do it to make money, forget it.

Teaching has to almost be a calling, IMO. I started off teaching high school in Wisconsin. Four years later, I moved to California and had a job as a high school counselor. I was shocked at the difference in the educational systems between the two states. In CA the parents ruled. Budgets for necessities were tight.

Then, I had the good fortune to begin teaching at a community college, where I have been ever since. (many, many moons.) It has been intellectually stimulating, exciting and I have had a lot of freedom. No, I did not get rich.

Here is the good part: I just took an early retirement. (I am much younger, cuter and sexier than you might think.) Because of all my years of teaching, I will be able to continue with my medical benefits and will get about 98% of my base pay. People I know who made lots more money than I are unable to retire because they cannot live on their retirement.

So, if you want to have your life's work be meaningful and have value....at least at the end of it all, there may be a little payback.

    Carol
