Slander would be if you could prove motive....I have never seen it happen. I remember one regular pioneer sister wanted another pioneer charged with it but then that sister showed that the other sister had said just as bad....it was dropped.

Also, elders gossip too.......and have better info.

Everyone. The gossip mill at our cong is downright vicious. I always found it ironic that even though the WT made an entire chapter in their books about the dangers of gossip, it's still so rampant. One of my good friends faded years ago, and she told me one of the biggest reasons she left was because the rumors made her and her parents social pariahs. People always say go to a different KH, but all of them to a degree have the same problem.

hard to answer this questions for any Puerto Rican. Gossip (bochinche) is the number one activity in my culture. I guess that being an island there's nowhere else to go so people turn to each other.

That aside, I think gossip is the real way congregations are run. A lot of people are in denial about how effective a gossip related system helps maintaining control of the people in it. It's the perfect manipulation from the WT since they keep their people at bay by letting it happen and their hands are clean.

Do you notice how they have so strong hold of every single other aspect of people's behavior, education, life decisions, etc, but when it comes to gossip they address it only when it doesn't lead the way they want it to go? They do not attack gossiping in congregations as strongly as any other behavior, and that's because there's something valuable in it for their interest.

So to answer the question, gossip, especially the malicious, slanderous type is very common in every congregation, as it is part of the JW culture.

As far as df'ing, the WTS differentiates between "gossip" and "slander." Gossiping is not listed here. (Remember just reporting not supporting)

    Guard Against Slander

    15. How would you differentiate between gossip and slander?

15 Since murmuring can lead to harmful gossip, we must be careful about what we say. Gossip is idle talk about people and their affairs. Slander, though, is a false report intended to damage another person’s reputation. Such talk is malicious and ungodly. God therefore told the Israelites: “You must not go around among your people for the sake of slandering.”—Leviticus 19:16.

    16. What did Paul say about certain gossipers, and how should we be affected by his counsel?

16 Since idle talk may lead to slander, Paul spoke out against certain gossipers. After mentioning widows who qualified for congregation assistance, he referred to widows who learned “to be unoccupied, gadding about to the houses; yes, not only unoccupied, but also gossipers and meddlers in other people’s affairs, talking of things they ought not.” (1 Timothy 5:11-15) If a Christian woman finds that she has a weakness for the kind of talk that could lead to slander, she will do well to heed Paul’s counsel to be “serious, not slanderous.” (1 Timothy 3:11) Of course, Christian men must also guard against harmful gossip.—Proverbs 10:19.

For Scriptural guidance in dealing with such serious sins as slander and fraud, see The Watchtower, October 15, 1999, pages 17-22.
