Getting Old

    Hi All,

I'm getting near 68 and I can't do the things I used to do without some pain.

Yesterday I worked on the lawn mower and I had to lift it onto the pinic table, wow! I didn't know they made them so much heavier now.

Today I'm replacing the brake pads on my 4X4 truck. My back just won't hold up long enough to finish both wheels. I had to take a break before I do the other wheel. I guess I'm fortunate I can still do things like this and I'm not going to stop untill I completely give out. Appreciate your youth while it is still there.!!! I still can enjoy my backyard swing though.

"Appreciate your youth while it is still there.!!! " Great advice Undecided.

Having grown up in the 60's with the idea that the new system was so near, I rarely gave thought to aging, dealing with aches and pains, having to take several breaks during a day of yard work that I used to be able to do non-stop until the job was done! For me, going back to the gym, stretching a lot after working out or doing work around the house, losing some weight, and drinking less booze has helped my energy level.

One of my best friends and mentor in the business I have been in for the past 25 years just turned 80. Although he suffers from some arthritis, etc., he maintains a positive outlook, and refuses to be labeled or even use the word "old". He just says he is getting more mature! I like that way of thinking.

    Best to you from,

Makena who will be 48 later this month.

Mak, you are still so young!!!!!! I will be 58 in September and it scares me!

No one ever told me that getting older would hurt! My back and legs hurt really bad from all the yard work I did this week. My sciatic nerves on both sides are killing me. Princess keeps telling me I need to join a gym................I agree................I'll think about it.

I know what you mean... I'm only well, let's say in my 30's, (my profile date is WRONG).. anyways, I used to be very fit, could climb any mountain...

I had a serious accident where my ankle was horribly broken. It took me 5 years to get back to a reasonable working ankle.... and now, well, I can't climb anything~!

The lesson there is, as you get older, and are not quite so active, your body kinda goes "backwards"... muscles don't get used, your back gets sore, and it's hard to get back to that level. Even when you do, it's never the same as when you were young....

Yes, it sucks getting older. Obviously I am not as old as you, but I certainly feel it! It seems, though that you are still doing pretty good! I hope to be doing what you are at your age!

Just think, Methulsalah must have been so positive he was probably obnoxious.

Yes, getting older is the pits.

    Undecided,

I know what you mean. I used to mow my lawn with no breaks. Now, at the age of 62, I have to take frequent breaks, and it takes me about twice a long to finish. Hey, I figure that it is better to pace myself than have a heart attack. Like you, I plan to continue with physical work as long as I can.

I am especially careful in the winter when shoveling snow. I have heard of too many stories of heart attacks from snow shoveling.

The woman across the street is an inspiration to me. She is 95, and takes the bus almost every day, to have a lunch down town or at the mall.

Shamus, I'm glad you made that post 'cause it gives me a better idea of what I'm facing, and how long it will take. (I fell 25 feet out of a tree in '98. One of the things that happened was my pelvis on the right side was torn completely off the spine. Now it's bolted back on. And I got a crushed L4 vertebra. I'll stop the list right there) And I've been wondering how long it would take for me to get back in some sort of reasonable shape.

I felt like I was about 35 when I went up that extension ladder (I was 53) and when I hit the ground I felt like I was 80. It's been a slooooooooow recovery. Now I feel like I'm about 69 (I'm 58), and I've not felt like myself ever since that day. Any way, maybe 8 years and I'll be about where you are, recovery wise.

    Thanks,
    francois

I was a pain in the ass when I was a kid and I'm still a pain at my age. Like Francois, I've fallen out of a tree except head first backwards, plus, I've survived 10 car crashes. Instead of living in the world of OZ, I live in painville. Pain is second nature to me, I still outwork a 20 year old!

The 80 year old that DE mentioned has the right/ideal attitude.
