Hi Englishman. I did not know that there were squirrels in the British Isles and Ireland.
Here in Canada, well, at least in southern Ontario, we have black squirrels, grey squirrels, flying squirrels, and some version of red/brown. We have chipmunks, which are related to the squirrel, but much smaller.
That was interesting. Yes, Cruzanheart is right. They are little bandits in the garden and around bird feeders. I've seen them hanging upside down eating seeds and suet. Or, digging up flower bulbs, raising the ire of gardeners.
Yes, nature is indeed very inspiring.
but we hunt them here. Good eats..
You have gots to be kidding?
Nina, that is the same story they tell in Hawaii.
We have a yard full of grey squirrels running up and down the trees and across the fences. I never feed them or shoot them but they are with us year round.
Now woodpeckers, that is another story. All it takes is one 5am wake up from a woodpecker pounding away on the roof vents and I want them dead. Steve is a good shot but apparently it is a felony to kill them. So we have a very fetching plastic owl residing on our roof. Works so far.
In St. Croix there are no snakes. Not one. That's because some dim bulb way back in the sugar cane plantation days thought it was a brilliant idea to import mongooses from India to combat the cane rat problem. Alas, they didn't realize that the cane rats party at night, and the mongooses are daytime creatures. So the hungry little mongooses (who probably still haven't seen a cane rat) started eating snakes. And, since they didn't have any predators they multiplied like rabbits and can be seen all over the island.
I'll take a mongoose over a snake any day!!!!!!!!! Similar situation in Hawaii. No snakes.

Awh Eman,
We have too many of them here, England can have all they want.
In Georgia they are so bad about getting into bird feeders that I wired the deck of the bird feeder with an electric fencer make to fence in cows. I left it off, plugged into an outside lite controled by a switch inside. When them criters got into the feeder I would turn the fencer on and watch them bounce up and down between the feeder deck and the feeder roof until they happened to bounce sideways and escape the high voltage pinball machine.
Gosh, aren't these Americans insensitive?

Sounds more entertaining than the green mile..
..and I thought that red squirrels were rare! I can just imagine squirrel pie, though..Mmmm.
Englishman.
In the USA they like piggy back riding when they get a chance.....
JOKE.......
Pesky Squirrels
Each of the three churches in the community, were been overrun with pesky squirrels.
One day, the Baptist Church called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined that the squirrels were pre-destined to be there and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will.
The Methodist group got together and decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creations. So, they humanely trapped the squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back.
It was only the Catholics who were able to come up with the best and most effective solution. They baptized the squirrels........and registered them as members of the church. Now they only see them on Christmas and Easter.
I know another one about nuts too!
