    Dang larc! Close call!

Before I bought my house I lived in an apartment where i had a crazy alchoholic old lady across the hall. One day I walked out of my apartment and smelled smoke. I could hear her smoke detector going off. I banged on her door, no response. So I called the fire department, they came and had to take an axe to her door. The smoke just poured out into the hallway. They found her inside, she was conscious but drunk and incoherent as hell. They put out the fire, she had left a cigarette burning on a couch cushion, it wasn't a big fire but it sure made a lot of nasty smoke. The whole place might have gone up had it not been for moi.

Scary stuff. I'm glad that it didn't get a chance to spread to the rest of the house...

(((((((((Larc & Zazu)))))))))) I am glad the damage was at a minimum.

hmmmm, I could use a new stove....... naw. Really thank you for sharing your experience. I store some spices on the back of the stove, I am going to move them.

Yikes!! Scary - recently my husband & I replaced all the outlet covers in our house. Had to turn the breakers off for that. After all the rooms were done the breaker kept tripping itself... (apparantly one of the wires had been connected incorrectly on the outlet cover which we easily found and resolved) - it lead us to discovering that the main power feed into the house had a loose contact and was sparking like no tomorrow. Our electrician neighbor came & fixed it but apparantly this is a common cause of house fires. We consider ourselves lucky!

Larc, good thing, you were (1) home and (2) awake.

I hope your insurance covers it.

It only goes to show that smoking can be dangerous.

larc, we're glad you and J. weren't hurt! and JeffT, that was too close.

I burned down our old house a few years ago...on purpose too!

It was in lieu of demolition; the fire department used it as a training exercise, set several spot fires in different rooms and the battalion chief went in with the rookies in shifts. When the whole structure became involved (after about an hour), boy, did it ever burn. Gave me a new respect for the power of fire.

    Glad y'all are OK.

    Larc,

Glad to know everything turned out o.k. One consolation--a new stove.
