This subject came up in another thread about the WTS paying for Silentlambs.

Does the Watchtower consciously lie? Do you have examples?

I know about a scandal that broke out during the '80's involving a huge number of bad decisions made by elders and

a deranged Circuit Overseer. The Society sent in a special committee to straighten out the mess.

A prominent Bethel elder on the committee told a local elder "You have to lie, sometimes"

    That's a quote.

Also, there are a number of stories emenating from Paterson/the Service Dept. indicating flat lies

such as telling callers that they can't be helped with information ( a gay group, I think) because "it's

a holiday" ( Not in Bethel!) or assurances that somebody won't be df'd or da'd when they have already

sent a letter recommending such an action.

How about misquotes in some of their publications. I am quite familiar with this tactic used in the 1985 Creation book.

    Conciuosly Lie ? Many:

-Involved with NGO (United Nations "Only involve w/ NGO for a Library Card" What a lie!)

-When changing policy about Alternative Services for Miltary Service, "In the past some Witnesses [not Society] have suffered for refusing to share in activity that their conscience now might permit" (Watchtower Aug.15, 1998, page 17) And the picture on page 16 (previous page )even blamed God about that "conscience" by saying "Even in the face of personal loss [because chose not involve in alternative services], we can be confidence that Jehovah is righteous [for allowing the NOT alternative happend]" (highlight in red is mine). Actually not those Witnesses consciences, but Society made up as such, anyone refuse to follow that kind of "Food to Go" Conscience will be DF!!!!

and you can add many more......

    One fine example :

Watchtower 1998 December 1 p14 Defending our faith

Jehovah's Witnesses have been targets of false accusations, barefaced lies and twisted presentations of their beliefs.

The accusation that numerous children of Jehovah's Witnesses die each year as a result of refusing blood transfusions is totally unfounded.

    Awake! May 22 1994 p2

    Youths who put God first

In former times thousands of youths died for putting God first. They are still doing it, only today the drama is played out in hospitals and courtrooms, with blood transfusions the issue.

About the Creation book, I concur that it contains lies. The least of which are taking scientist's comments out of context and quoting them to back up the creationist view, in effect twisting the quotation sometimes by 360 degrees. I have met one such offended scientist.

aking scientist's comments out of context and quoting them to back up the creationist view

Exactly. It is quite disgusting. But I'm very thankful they did it because it played a major role in me breaking free from the borg. It helped me lose my implicit trust in the organization.
