Good News Story

Here's a REAL good news story, at least I think so.

I was one of the instructors of the Confirmation class at my Catholic Church. Since the Bishop was coming the Knights of Columbus (a Catholic Mens Organization) was performing duties as Honor Guard. When the Knights are the Honor GUard they wear Tuxedos, a large hat with Ostrich Plumes, a Cape, white gloves, and a sword. This is called their Regalia (I'll post a picture of the Regalia later. As the Sir Knights were vesting their capes the two Co-Instructors asked who these gentlemen were and what they were doing. I gave a brief explanation of the honor guard. Knowing I was a Knight they asked if I vested in Regalia. I explained that I was saving my pennies so I could purchase my own. After Mass one of the Co-Instructors, handed me a check for $300.00 and told me to order my Regalia. She had talked to one of the Sir Knights after mass and asked what he'd paid for his Regalia. His response was $300.00. She's a great gal. She had also purchased 19 leather bound bibles and had the names of students inscribed on them as a confirmation present...the gal has a couple of extra dollar I think.

Once I have my Regalia I'm going to have a photo taken and framed and present it to her as a thank you. My Dad also has the Regalia, We're going to do a picture together in our get up. (My Dad is cool).

Anyhow, that's my story, I had a good time.

Just a question.....I know that women can't be priests because the Pope says so, but why can't women be in the Knights of Columbus? Is it exclusively a men's club? And, if it is, why is this so? Do Catholic women have their own club?

I was a Catholic, once-upon-a-time, but was never a very "good" Catholic, so I really don't remember the Knights of Columbus.

I say that chicks like men in any uniform, no matter what it is. Even doormen.

Frankly, without prejudice to any other of the armed forces, I think the Marine Formal Dress Mess uniform (did I say that right?) is tops for the services of the US. (In fact, I think I'll wander off and see if I can find a picture of it.)

But I still say that any uniformed man has a certain magnetism over and above what even he - the uniformed one - has when he's not in uniform as far as chicks go.

I decided to paste a link to a page with Marine Formal Evening wear pictures. Too much trouble to go to, putting an image in, and I can never get it to work. Here's your link

Enjoy. I like the one with the cape.

    Shakita,

The reason the Knights of Columbus is NOW exclusively a men's group is because men, just like women, need a place to define how to be male and Catholic. It started from the practicalities of when the KofC was formed in 1882 by Fr McGivney. It was formed as a mutual beneficial fraternity. Males were the bread winners back then, so it was the males that banned together to insure their widows were taken care of if they died. Soon after they formed the Knights were able to give the widow of a brother Knight $1000.00 at his death, not a small sum back then.

They were also formed to protect themselves, with groups like the KKK, the Know Nothings, etc running around, and most Catholics being Immigrants or 1st generation Americans, we were targets, the priests as well. Some of the old timers here in SC remember their Fathers and Grandfathers serving as body guards for the priests and bishops in Charelston.

Today we are a fraternal benefits society. In 1998 the Knights of Columbus gave over $100 million to charities (we especially like the Special Olympics and the mentally handicapped) and provided over 50 million volunteer hours to the communities we live in by way of blood drives, etc. The KofC has also developed into an Insurance Company receiving the highest rating possilbe by all groups in the US that rate Insurance Companies. We have over 42 BILLION dollars of Insurance in force now. My KofC whole life insurance figures prominently into my retirement plan. After ten years of paying my $139 a month (perhaps earlier) I won't make another premium payment. When I reach 65 I should be able to draw about $700 a month and still be insured for over $100,000 when I kick.

Did I mention the local Council elected me as the Grand Knight? WOOHOO! That and a dollar will get me a cup of coffee at Wal-Mart.

My local council, in one weekend, raised over $4000.00 for the mentally handicapped in this region. Can ya tell I'm proud of the Organization. Ya know, if the JW's were out trying to benefit the community like this, I'd have a LOT more respect for them.
