Why did God tolerate slaves?

In the past, people had male and female slaves as shown below:

Exodus 21:20 When a slaveowner strikes a male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies immediately, the owner shall be punished. But if the slave survives a day or two, there is no punishment; for the slave is the owner's property.

Why did God tolerate this? In what ways, do you feel like a slave in today's society?

"God" tollerated it because when "God" wrote the bible, the people who it favoured owned slaves.

Blimey, it's almost as if they wrote the bible to suite their own ends and superstitions isn't it?

I don't think owning slaves can be reconciled with a loving god.

*LOL* Simon...I was also thinking how many times the biblical god used it as punishment of some kind or another, whether it was the tale of one poor slob becomming enslaved or a whole nation...very effective form of punishment I think.

If there is a god, his lack of compassion is his reason for tolerating slaves and the Bible illustrates this. I'm participating in this thread because I can.

From the picture of god painted by the bible, we learn that god is a racist who views races not specifically in his favour as undeserving of basic human rights.

:In what ways, do you feel like a slave in today's society?

Understanding, as most people do by now, exactly how horrible slavery is and was, I don't feel like a slave in any way shape or form. If, for instance, it is difficult to make a living to the standard I would like, and I have to do work that is unappealing to me, I still don't compare myself in any way to a slave. It would be trite and flippant for me to do so. However, I do know people (a couple of single moms come to mind), who are so trapped in a very difficult living/making ends meet situation that the analogy, if not accurate, is at least appropriate.

Wasn't slavery originally a way of borowing money and then selling your time to pay it back?

..Or the time of your son or daughter perhaps?

    Because god is fake.

I think slavery originally resulted from warefare between tribes. Suvivors were taken and forced into slavery.

The fact that it was tolerated by God is just another indication that Jehovah was a Bronze Age God made in the likeness of the Bronze Age people who worshipped him and made him up. And this God they made up didn't like them worshipping the Golden Calf. Likely there was some competition between the priests of the old calf god and the new jehovah god and the truth will never be known.

All I know for sure is that I ain't worshipping no Bronze Age God.
