Jesus in Hebrew means "Savior' and Christ in Greek means "Messiah". these are identifiers --not names in Jesus case.

Where did the name Christ come from, his parents????I can see the name Jesus (first name) but Christ. Did Mary and Joseph call him Christ, the children in the neighborhood call him Christ????Man you taking about swelling a child's head or spoiling a kid..

"Of Nazareth" or "Of Galilee" or "the carpenter". Jesus is a regular name for the era and place, a derivative of Joshua, they didn't have surnames back then because your circle of known associates was pretty small, any duplicates were resolved with placenames or occupations.

Christ and Messiah are transliteration of the same word/meaning, namely savior or redeemer, the former in (Koine???) Greek, the other in Hebrew. Those titles were added later long after any historical Jesus and all of any supposed apostles/disciples were long dead.

That is assuming Jesus was a real character, most scholars no longer accept that narrative.

They probably called him by his Hebrew name, Yeshua. That's also Joshua in Hebrew.

Since he was supposed to be Joseph's son, he was probably known as Yeshua ben-Yosep = Joshua, son of Joseph

As you noted, "Jesus" comes from the Greek version of the name "Yeshua," and the New Testament was originally written in Greek.

"Christ" is a title from the Greek for "Messiah."

He wouldn't have been called that as a child just as David wasn't called "king" as a child.

Anony: If Jesus was a real character maybe that why is very difficult to trace his family ancestry,"they didn't have surnames..

Ding: Good point "David wasn't called "king" as a child.

    JRK: Jesus Fred Christ????LOL

had he lived later, his name would have been Jesus Middleman Fischbein, because his family was poor, not Goldberg for the rich. (he would not have been allowed to be a carpenter guild member either) condemned to go into banking, merchandising or be in another intermediary profession.

The question, if he was living today what religious organization would he be a member or how many recruits could he get to follow him. I would love to see Jesus approach a cart JW, "sir you can't be Jesus, he's invisible"....

This is how Bart Ehrman tries to trick his students: by asking the question, "What was Jesus' (or Paul's) last name?" The fact is that people in Antiquity did not have last names. They were usually identified as "[name] son of [the person's father's name]" or "[name] of [place of birth]." This is why Jesus is often referred to as Jesus of Nazareth. (There is strong evidence indicating he wasn't born in Bethlehem.) At times, he is also called Jesus son of Joseph (John 6.42) and Jesus son of Mary (Mark 6.3).

In addition, in Antiquity, some people had sort of nicknames, or cognomina (cognomen in singular form), given to them, which is why Jesus is most often called Jesus Christ (the latter part of his name being the cognomen.) A cognomen was initially a nickname given to someone because of a certain characteristic this person exhibited. This characteristic was supposed to differentiate the person from others. Since Jesus was known among his disciples as the anointed one (christos in Greek, maschiah in Hebrew, Christ/messiah as English transliterations), he was given the cognomen christos. It was later translated into Latin christus, which then was transliterated into English Christ.

Having said that, I am convinced Jesus' parents did not give him this nickname. In our earliest gospel, gospel of Mark, Jesus' family thinks that he is out of his mind because he began to preach (Mark 3.21)! (This verse also indicates that the author either didn't know of or didn't believe in the virgin birth story. This has led scholars to believe that the virgin birth story was a later invention.)

The whole story is a joke, "Jesus' family thinks that he is out of his mind", what did the family think when Mary told Joseph family, sorry he is not the father his father is in heaven...Joseph family "that is some BS, we may be poor and uneducated but we are not stupid.. Joseph may be a little slow but we are not that gullible, so who is the real father???
