The stories coming out of Italy at the moment are unbelievable.

Berlusconi is the Italian Prime Minister. He is also the countries biggest media mogul and the President of Real Madrid football club.

He recently telephoned a live television debate on Italy's top political program and shouted at the presenter,( for daring to bring up the scandal that is facing Berlusconi ) and said to him ' You are a public sector worker, know your place!'

He then took the program off the air and sacked the presenter. So much for freedom of speech.

He was answering questions yesterday in front of a commitee, about bribes for judges etc and stated that in Italy, all men are equal, but he was more equal than others! Yes, he actually said it.

His political allies are rushing through parliament measures to make him immune to prosecution.

The people want him out, but of course this is democracy at work.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, on trial over corruption charges, has taken the stand for the last time before Italy's parliament is due to vote him immunity and freeze the trial.

The trial centres on accusations that he paid off judges to influence the privatisation of food company SME in the 1980s.

He denies the charges and says he is the victim of politically motivated, left-wing magistrates. The SME sale was overseen by Romano Prodi, the EU Commission president who was then the head of Italian state industries.

Taking the stand, Berlusconi ridiculed the accusations and said his detractors are only interested in wrecking his reputation.

"There is no evidence, no proof or testimony and there is no motive," Berlusconi said in a defiant, 70-minute statement.

It is only his second appearance at the three-year-old trial. He will not have to return for the foreseeable future if, as expected, parliament approves a bill tomorrow that will shield him from prosecution while he remains in office.

After Berlusconi's speech, which was shown live on state television, the judges adjourned the session until June 25, aware that the trial will have to be postponed indefinitely once parliament approves the immunity bill.

Under the terms of the bill, magistrates will be able to investigate accusations of wrongdoing against Italy's top five institutional figures, including the prime minister and president, but will not be able to bring them to trial.

This means Berlusconi will be safe from prosecution until he leaves elected office, scheduled for 2006.

    Oh, Italian politics... wonderful...

... this is from the country that has had more seperate governments since WWII than there have been YEARS since WWII.

The voters have got so bored of the process that the extremists have been disproportionately represented in many of the elections, as they are the ones who can be arsed voting.

    Berlusconi is a criminal.

    What happened?

Rome, world Empire, hundreds of years, the mightiest millitary force.

Italy, can't run itself let alone an Empire, tanks with six reverse gears and a battle flag consisting of a white cross on a white background.

In the outmost sadness, that's completely true. And the excerpts do not give the idea of the arrogance and the idiot pride of this man, who's using the institutions of our country to protect his business, his family and his corrupt friends, insulting everyday the half part of Italy that has not voted him.

Woes upon you all on the other side of the Ocean, 'cause he counts himself among the best Bush's friends....

    Greetings, TI.

It is amazing that this man can walk out of court when being questioned because he's 'late' for an appointment!

Who does he think he is?

Oh, yes, he's the Owner of the media and the Prime Minister, so I suppose you can do what you want then.

And I thought Blair was bad!

Well Mr Berlusconi surpassed himself last week.

He was at the European Parliament and was not happy with being attacked by a German MEP and told the German minister that a film was being made in Italy about a German Concentration Camp during the war, and that he would make a good commandant.

"When will it ever end?" the tabloid Bild newspaper asked on Friday, reflecting the general sense of frustration amongst Germans.

Silvio Berlusconi and Gerhard Schroeder Schroeder (r) has been avoiding further questions about the gaffe
They are fed up. More than half a century after World War II, national stereotypes are still being dredged up.

Many Germans regard Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's comments that a German member of the European Parliament would be "perfect" for the role of a guard in a film about a Nazi concentration camp as insensitive and crass.

Young people who have had to come to terms with their country's Nazi past are equally astounded that a senior statesman could have put his foot in his mouth.

The German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, claims the row with Italy is now over after Silvio Berlusconi telephoned Mr Schroeder to express his "regret".

The German chancellor has spent the day holed up in his office holding private meetings, avoiding any further questions about Mr Berlusconi's gaffe.

But for Martin Schulz, the German member of the European Parliament at the centre of the affair, the row is far from over.

In an interview with a German radio station, Mr Schulz denied that he had provoked Silvio Berlusconi and said the Italian Prime Minister must apologise to the European Parliament.

"If Berlusconi were to say: people, I am wrong, it won't be repeated, then the incident is settled. It has to be made clear to him, this is not a boxing match," Mr Schulz told Deutschlandradio.

altBerlusconi-bashing in the media and political circles will continue alt Tom Levine
    Berliner Zeitungz

In comparing a German politician to a concentration camp guard, and appearing to make a joke of the Nazi era, Silvio Berlusconi has broken one of Europe's long-standing taboos.

He has also violated rules of etiquette in Europe's central institutions.

The German EU commissioner, Guenter Verheugen, told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper that Mr Berlusconi's outburst had damaged the Italian presidency and had hurt Europe.

So while Silvio Berlusconi and Gerhard Schroeder may be trying to play down the diplomatic fall-out from the affair, the damage has been done.

"The crisis is certainly over for the German Government for the time being," Tom Levine from the Berliner Zeitung newspaper told the BBC. "But Berlusconi-bashing in the media and political circles will continue."
