When I was a full-fledged believer, I actually did to some extent. The work was kind of intimidating, but the thought of teaching someone watching them change their life did kind of intrigue me. I never did have a Bible study till about a year before I left and I always kind of felt a little bad about never having had a Bible study. I think I even prayed for one. The one I finally got was a young high school student. He wasn't particularly sophisticated, so no difficult Bible debates there. However, I don't think he was ever too much interested in it although he went along with it for a while. He was living with his grandfather who seemed happy to have him doing the study. But he had an older sister whom I never saw, but I got the feeling was not particularly in support of it. I gave him a NWT Bible. A few weeks later I come by and he has a brand new KJV Bible given him by his sister who has told him that is a good Bible. Eventually, he breaks off the study, which in retrospect, I am glad he did.

I'm pretty sure I wanted to. First off, the whole goal of our preaching work was to convert somebody. To go year after year and never come close to fulfilling that goal was a bit frustrating. Those that had studies had them coming to the KH and some of them joined. A Bible study was the first step towards converting somebody. They also made it out to be something great and it was a bit of a symbol of maturity that you could hold one. A status symbol. I also enjoy teaching and it's very rewarding to see somebody learn. So there were very good reasons to want that within the JW culture.
On the flipside, I was always nervous that I wasn't good enough to teach. That somebody was going to ask me something that I couldn't answer and I'd stumble them. So it was very intimidating.
And even on the more subversive side, a study could be counted as time, right? I figured an hour talking to somebody in a house was far better than going door to door in cold, rain, heat, meeting people who told you to get lost.

You can spend a lifetime studying the Bible and associated historical documents and just before the ticker stops you will find out you know no more than you did when you started. If you throw in some belief system or portions of one you will arrive at some far out conclusion that still will not make any sense.
