I copied my reply from the "can you confirm this WT quote" thread because I wanted to highlight the need to be careful when talking to JW relatives.

It all started out as a joke for my JW brother. For 7 years, since I left the WTS, I've kept silent about what I've found out about the WTS to prevent my losing contact with him and his family.

I sent him an email the other day jokingly wondering if he was going to stop preaching since the 20th century is over, included in the email was the WT quote from 1-1-89. He emailed me back, saying that he looked it up and it said "our generation". I replied by saying that the quote was changed because of the screw up. He then replied saying that the WTS never changes anything, and that they don't make predictions! Unbelievable! Just moments ago I sent the scanned copy of the 1-1-89 WT article. It was a terse reply from him, and now he has first hand knowledge that I'm an 'apostate', he may never speak to me again.

We enjoyed several years of association, even though it's been infrequent because he lives in another state. Now, I had to open my big yap and possibly destroy that. What the hell have I done?

Let it go for a while and then act normal.

We did this with my Mother and Father In-law and although their reply was
terse and you could tell they were upset, by the time we called back 2
weeks later, we pretended nothing was different and they did the same.

Things have been back to "normal" ever since.

It may all work out ok

Maybe I'm just overreacting. Thanks you guys. Bugeye, I will give it some time and send him some other unrelated email. Also, My brother is supposed to come over here for my other brother's daughter's graduation. I guess I'll find out then how he treats me.

Hey TR,
I accidently opened a can of worms with my little brother yesterday too!! We were talking about the upcoming Dateline episode, and I think that he may think of me as "apostate" now too. We were chatting via AOL instant mess. and he just signed off in the middle of the discussion.
Just wanted to let you know that I'm in the boat with ya.
Wow, with the cartoons and now this, we are starting to seem a lot alike. Scary.

TR, I'm thinking you may have planted a seed and with time it will sink it roots deep into the mind of your brother. Sound reasoning has a way of doing that! Doesn't the bible say "come let us reason together"? You never know when a little stinker of an idea will bloom into a full blown mental flatuate!

Hey Tr,
I guess it really depends on your family. I sent an email to my innactive sister from this board. It actually was nothing Witness related. It was from Kismet(I believe) and was entitled "Had enough" really just a motivational page. But oops my active sister was with her when she opened her email. Needless to say, my mother found out, I was now associating with apostates, and even joined in the discussion! Horror of all horrors I was no longer worthy of their conversation, thus my second shunning. This time my children were and are affected.

I am finding a really hard time coming up with excuses to my kids why my mom will not call them or write them letters anymore. She would write once a week or every other week and always called and sent email to them.

Now nothing..................

I am so sorry TR, sometimes we forget how shallow they are and how their minds are so warped by the Wtbts teachings. Even a joke or something we feel is a good deed is grounds for permanent removal from their life.

I hope your brother will be able to look over the hurt of the Wtbts has caused him. You do know it is a slap in his face and he is rejecting them not you, right? But he has been trained to ignore you because the Wtbts is always right and people that don't believe are evil
