In a way I’m glad the WTS has hinted that mobile phones are expensive, time wasting, immoral devices. Anything to reduce the number of people shouting into plastic blocks on public transport gets my vote. However they go as far as to assume that young people who have one will use it to talk to members of the opposite sex! And worse…WHEN AN ADULT IS NOT PRESENT!
“Since the calls come directly to the individual, not to the home, there is a danger of parents not being aware of whom their kids are talking to or even whether they are on the phone or not. Some youths thus use mobile phones to establish secret contact with those of the opposite sex.”
This must really have opened the eyes of some parents. Who would have thought that their young Christian daughter might actually consider talking boys? However, a young girl mentioned later in the article, is saved from her slutty ways by the loving intervention of the Elders:
“When Keiko, a 17-year-old Christian girl, started using a mobile phone, she let many of her friends know her number. Soon she started exchanging messages every day with a boy in her congregation. Keiko says: "At first we just talked about everyday things, but then we started sharing our troubles. We created our own little world. Happily, she received help from her parents and the Christian elders before things got too serious”
Phew. That was close. Young Keiko, the 17 year-old Christian girl almost…I’m not actually sure what she almost did, but it must have been bad because the Elders intervened. All is made clear in a small footnote printed at the bottom of the page:
“Regularly talking to or exchanging messages with a member of the opposite sex over the phone could be a form of dating. Please see the article "Young People Ask—What's Wrong With Talking to Each Other?" in the August 22, 1992, issue of Awake!”
So, now unless young people are considering marriage, talking/txting a member of the opposite sex will get you in heaps of trouble. Just like Young Keiko, the 17 year-old Christian girl, who almost did something wrong. She must have been so happy to have the guiding hand of Jehovah’s organization in the form of an elder demanding to read all her personal txt messages. Oh what joy.
I’m looking forward to the next article entitled “The immoral dangers of a Mobile phone vibrate mode and young women”
The above article can be found at www.watchtower.org for anyone bored enough to bother….
