I agree Ash! Driving test need to be much tougher and readministered every year past a certain age.

This tragedy has made me take action on a neighbor of ours. I have talked to his son (40's) about his father who is suffering from dementia. The man is still driving.
I read this story and have called the local police. They are seeing what they can do to stop him from driving. I don't want to know he is unable to drive and do nothing. -

I am going to post this seperately but thought I would pass it on here too.
We received this e mail...maybe a hoax about this event.
Here it is...
Just a quick note to let you know that out of the 9 dead and some
injured in the run away car incident at the Farmer's Market in Santa
Monica (we visit that), one brother got struck. Brother Kavelin, a
friend of ours who wrote the song "Make The Truth Your Own", got struck
and has both his legs badly broken. It looks like he is going to survive
and we are so thankful, but what a horrible situation that has been. -

Truly a very sad event.
I remember watching Huell Howser (he does a show on different places in California on PBS) do a show on the Farmer's Market and I really wanted to visit there sometime.
Both of my Grandmothers didn't drive. And my Grandfathers died before this was an issue.
However, my MIL (81) and my spouses Grandmother, (who drove until she was 98!) this was really an issue. Both fought tooth and nail to drive. We would always very gently suggest they stop driving, but they would only become very angry. And I remember my spouse's Grandmother being quite insulted because she had to renew every year. We were always shocked that both of them had managed to pass both the vision and written tests. Finally, health and memory issues forced them both to stop. Though, I do remember my husband's Grandmother had gotten into quite a few fender benders and had actually ripped the rear door off her car because she forgot to close it and it got caught on the garage as she backed out (She was about 95). With the minor accidents, I remember she would always beg the othe parties not to call the police, or contact insurance companies. So, whether or not she was at fault, she would pay for all the damages without question, just because she was so terrified of losing her license. I know that independence was the big issue with both of them.
I'm just so glad they never injured anyone.

I certainly hope this terrible incident changes some laws. Basically I think a lot of these eldery people who still drive are in denial that they are 'old' and think they still have the same energy, reflexes, and alertness that they did when they were younger, not to mention that the it's probably all to easy for them to keep a drivers license. If it was one of my loved ones who died there I would probably be suing the State of California.
