The Florida Supreme Court has ruled that as long as they can pay for it, children as young as 12 can receive elective plastic surgery without parental consent. Sound far fetched? Not really, considering that the Florida Courts have indeed ruled that 12 year olds can get an abortion without parental consent. Regardless of how you feel about abortion, what's happened to parental rights and responsibility. In a society where schools can't give kids aspirins without parental consent for fear of Law Suits the courts have decided children this young are mature enough to make decisions like abortion. What say you??

Good grief.
I thought having an MD after your name implied a certain ethical standard, like one that would make you think twice about giving a 12 year old whatever they want, provided they could afford to pay for it themselves.
I guess we'll be seeing a bunch of rich little girls seeking breast augmentation so they can attract the older boys....

Yer, I failed to clip out an newspaper article about 10-12 year olds are having oral sex in school. Kids may be more educated today, but they still don't know how to wipe their ass!

I live in Florida Yeru, and that is not the worst of it. If you listen to the radio here in Orlando, they have advertisements for "Kid's Night" at some of the local clubs where 13-20 year olds can get into the club and mingle with the over 21 crowd who drink.
Whose idea was it to let 13, 14, and 15 years old to have legal access to the clubs and to associate with 21+ people? They try to make it sound appropriate by giving the disclaimer in the commercial that you must be over 21 to drink. But still.
Then they wonder why kids get pregnant, raped, or the like. Knowingly allowing 13 year olds to get into the club is insanity, but the radio shows do it, and the government allows it.

I understand what you're saying, but how is a 12 year old going to pay for plastic surgery on their own anyway? You're talking thousands and thousands of dollars!
I just hope that when we have children we'll have a good relationship and they'll be able to come to me when they want an abortion or a nose job. Is that a pipe dream?!

Isn't that wonderful that it's legal for a 12 year old to get an abortion, but it's illegal if you try teaching the Ten Commandments to her?

While I do not necessarily agree with the ruling for 12 year olds. I do not want to have religion shoved down children's throats at school either.
Please refrain from attempting to mix religion into this conversation. In fairness parents have the right to not have religious beliefs imposed on their children while they are trying to get an education.
Period. Be it Christianity (the 10 Commandments) Islam, or the like.
You probably would not want schools forcing kids to learn the Koran.

Reborn, I wouldn't want religion shoved down my kids throats at school either; I think we had enough of that in the Borg. However I don't consider teaching children the moral values of something like the Ten Commandments as 'shoving religion down their throats' it's just basic guides on having some moral values. My comparison between the two was only to highlight the depravity at which our morals seem to have sunk to: Abortion for a 12 years old: OK; teaching kids the Ten Commandments: NO.
The real question is: what the hell is a 12 year old girl doing, having sex?!

When it comes to 12 year olds in our society having sex and then proceeding with an abortion, I completely agree with you, it should NOT be happening.
However when you reference the 10 Commandments, it IS forcing religion upon a person. Teaching the Ten Commandments involves invoking the idea that God talked to man (Moses) and specificly gave directions about what is or is not acceptable. Why choose Christianity's version over another religion? This would be the same if a school taught Islamic commandments that women should wear burqas and always obey men.
I repeat. DO NOT use religion as an analogy here when saying abortions are legal, but teaching the Ten Commandments is not.
Children can be taught basic morals which are generally accepted in our society without bringing any God or religion into the equation.
