God is a creation of man, so it would appear that lots of people need a god. Not the other way around.

Well, I think the problem is that we are defining 'love' in human terms. God is LOVE--but love, in itself is almost as indefinable as God. They can both be described by different attributes--but in reality, they are much, much more than the definitions we give them. Love is an enormous, creative, light, energy. God is an enormous, creative, light, energy.
Human beings are inclined to make God in their image. God does not 'love' the way we do. That is why so much of the bible is just obvious silliness. God, in the bible, behaves like a human--and sometimes, not even a very GOOD human!
